Wood deck cleaning

They used a surface cleaner on the wood walkway. That’s why there’s a straight line of uncleaned wood along the edge. (edit: I see you already spotted that. I misread SC as SH and thought you were saying the SH did the damage).

@SPC I took on another deck because I wanted to try something I found at Home Depot for $1.98.

Turns out it was a typo and supposed to say $9.98.

Well… the homeowner and I were pleasantly surprised with the results and got a deck done for $50.

Took about 45 minutes and used a bucket and a soft brush to apply it. Surprisingly effective for a $10 big box bottle.

So it took 5 gal?

There are a lotta decks that need cleaning, but i dont try and push them and only take them if easy right now. Something that didnt take $100 of shipping to get here would make decks worth pushing cause they cud be an easy upsale in the shape some of them are in.

Took 1 gallon. Used the soft brush and spread it out and the stuff just peeled off. $10. If I wasn’t testing it I would’ve upcharged $150 with the house wash.

You mix it 50/50. So 2 gallons of mix.

Oh ok… will have to look into that it.

@squidskc that looks good…did u pre wet or just brush it on and rinse? Or did u let dwell for a few. I might stop by and get my a gallon to try out.

It’s worth a try.

Wet it down. Brush it on and keep it wet for 15 minutes. If it’s much bigger than this deck or it’s got stairs you’ll need two gallons. I was down to the bottom of the bucket.

Rinse off 1500 psi.

At Publix supermarket, they will honor the sticker price even if it’s a typo

So what’s the active ingredient in that stuff?

I was surprised to read that my kids bath soap has sodium hydroxide

They honored the price.

I’m not sure what’s in it.

You should have ran back to get more! xP

It’s a 5% oxalic acid mix. You scare me sometimes. You could have gotten the exact same results by spraying a 2% bleach solution on with your 12v and washing off with no brushing or using Sodium Percarbonate. Oxalic acid is a pretty dangerous chemical. Don’t understand why you guys would ever use anything you didn’t know what was in it. You can’t let it get anywhere near a drain or fresh water.

I assumed some kind of oxalic which is why I brushed it on instead pump sprayer. Didn’t want it to atomize.

I’ve never felt comfortable using SH on wood though.

The only reason I tried it without knowing what it was is because homeowner grade stuff is usually designed so Joe Homeowner doesn’t kill himself with it. I didn’t even expect it to work, but it sure as heck did.

Two things that won’t change:

  1. I won’t be adding decks into the regular mix of work.
  2. My chemical usage will always scare you. Lol

It’s in most soaps. A small quantity is used to balance the pH and make it less acidic.

I’d be more concerned with the sodium laurel sulfate. Look it up.
