Bypass flow not trickling

You should be getting about a 5 - 10% %flow out of bypass. Where did you hear trickle drip?

For that unloader:

1. Put in the tip that corresponds to your machine’s highest pressure rating (or slightly below it)
2. Put a quality pressure gauge behind the gun.
3. Undo locknut on unloader
4. Start with top bolt on unloader all the way out (not out of the top, but like all the way “high”
5. Start machine with trigger pulled
6. Tighten top bolt until the pressure stops rising in the guage
7. Make sure you still have a tiny trickle going into bypass when you’re on the trigger.

The unloader should be set with the amount of hose you intend to run most often and it should be set to bypass just a trickle. The psi it’s set at is not important really. If you want to lower the psi use a different nozzle

You are bypassing water because your unloader is not set properly. Toss the gauge. Adjust until you have a slight trickle of bypass and stop. You could try three different gauges and get three different readings.

I’ve been doing a lot of research with the search feature about this. I’ve never set an unloader before and will be setting one tomorrow with new 5.5 gear drive pump connected to gx390. I’ve seen a few different opinions on here…but I’m just wanting to be sure since you guys have set a million of them. Correct me if anything is wrong here:

Use a max pressure tip matched for your pump (7.0)
for me.

Start machine…squeeze trigger and don’t let go. Adjust unloader up or down until slight trickle comes out of unloader bypass…let go of trigger…never touch it again. Is this correct?

I think I would just pull the hose off of the barb closest to the garden hose connection, plug it, and watch the flow out of the hose coming off the unloader. Actually, I would pull the hose off of the unloader, pinch it off with some vise grips, and just let the bypass water shoot straight out of the side of the unloader. Either will work. Once it’s set just put the hose back on. Another option might be pulling the plug on the left hand side of the unloader. That could also be a bypass but not sure.

Once you you’re ready to set the unloader just pull the trigger and turn the unloader until water barely trickles out of the bypass.

First. If you are running a 13 hp engine it is physically impossible to get 4 at 4000. How much hose are you using while setting unloader? Pressure gauge should not br used when setting unloader. Never start machine unless trigger is already pulled when installing new unloader. Pressure is irrelevant. Set for max flow and pressure is what it is. Adjust unloader until allow about a drop a second is running thru bypass. That’s it. You’re done. 4 at 4000 is like pressure pros selling 8 at 3500. False advertising
