Setting new unloader

I’ve been doing a lot of research with the search feature about this. I’ve never set an unloader before and will be setting one tomorrow with new 5.5 gear drive pump connected to gx390. I’ve seen a few different opinions on here…but I’m just wanting to be sure since you guys have set a million of them. Correct me if anything is wrong here:

Use a max pressure tip matched for your pump (7.0)
for me.

Start machine…squeeze trigger and don’t let go. Adjust unloader up or down until slight trickle comes out of unloader bypass…let go of trigger…never touch it again. Is this correct?

That’s the way I prefer to do it

Very informative and spot on thank you!

What great advice on this forum! I set the unloader today like mentioned above and it runs like a top! I don’t have a pressure gauge…but I did a bucket test with the new HP5535 5.5 gpm gear drive pump. It overflows a 2 gallon bucket in 19 seconds. Maybe a bit underated. I’ve seen some complain that the gx390 can’t handle this pump but I’m impressed. It’s great for residential housewashing and light concrete work.

Lol…that was a nice little trip back to the 90s

How did you determine the max pressure tip? 8gpm 3500psi pressure washer would mean I would want an 8.5?

Unless you have something bigger than a gx690, you probably don’t have 8/3500. I use a #9 on my 8/3000 machine’s

Bookmarked thanks @Barry1

Yep it’s just a gx690. I’ll pick up a #9. Thank you for the help!

So I did the same today, …i ordered a 0070, 25070, and a 40070. Unfortunately I got a 0060 instead but the 25 and 40 were correct. So I had to use the 25º tip, and when i went to set it, I couldn’t tighten it enough to get a “slight trickle”. It was a light spray out of the unloader, but never a trickle. Did i do something wrong? I dont want to mess this pump up obviously, but is there a diff tip I can use like an old red tip and get it set right?

You don’t need a red tip just any maximum pressure tip. A 25 degree tip puts out the same pressure as a 0 or 15 degree. You may have to turn the unloader knob counterclockwise to bring the pressure down. That’s what I did…all while pulling the trigger and aim the gun away at the ground or in the air. All of the water spraying out your bypass should be coming out your nozzle so you’re losing some gpm. You can also take the plastic top off the unloader and tighten down those nuts to tighten it more

Now that I think about it…i did it wrong. The slight spray out of the unloader was when i let off the gun. I need the trickle while ON the gun…attention to detail, I didn’t slow down and read…thanks man

The slight spray bypassing while your trigger is off is bad. It should be coming out strong. You definitely need to get that unloader set right before doing work with it

Will do for sure. Thanks for the help, it’s much appreciated

Did you you get a flow or pressure actuated unloader? Because the process for setting them correctly is different.

If it’s the same pump I got it comes plumbed with a pressure trapped unloader

So I thought I would post on this board since it’s already a created topic. I just bought a pump and put an unloader on it but have not set an the loader before like this. Since I bought everything separately it didn’t come with a set of tips. It’s a 5gpm pump. I bought the Jrod setup from bob and wanted to check if this tip would be the one I use for setting the unloader. These are what came with the kit. I assume the 0015 would be the one to us. Is this correct or do I need another tip. DOWNSTREAM NOZZLE KIT
(1) 4 WAY NOZZLE HOLDER #6540
(1) 1/4 MEG 0040 #3626
(1) 1/4 MEG 0015 #6015
(1) 1/4 MEG 2540 #3246
(1) 1/4 MEG 2515 #1107

Actually with more research I now understand what the max pressure tip is. I couldn’t make sense of it at first. But it’s a 5gpm on a gx390 so roughly 2800psi. Which would be a red tip 6.5 size oriface.

Yeah jrod tips are low pressure which shouldn’t be used for setting the unloader. Any of the colored red, yellow, green, or white (not black one) tips are max pressure tips that can be used to set it.
