Moving from a truck to a trailer this season. Which unit would you recommend? With the pricing similarity I’m torn. I do like the Big Tex for their tubular steel vs. angle iron.
A 5x8 is so hard to see when backing up. Get at least a 6x8
If you plan on adding a full size ladder rack or putting your reels or machines on stands you’ll hate that tube top trailer. With angle you can basically play adult Legos with anything you want to add on to the trailer.
Holy smokes that Big Tex is expensive. I just paid $600 more for a 77x14 tandem axle with brakes and all LED lights and a gate.
Also, I agree with IBS. 5x8 is very small. A 5x10 would be the smallest trailer I’d consider building a wash trailer out of.
If I may add…
For the life of me I couldn’t find a 5x10-ish enclosed trailer locally under $4500. I had to drive out in rural Indiana to find a good deal, so don’t be afraid to drive a ways to save $$$.
This is solid advice. Go to trailer country to find trailers.
It’s also probably worth noting that I bought my trailer direct from the manufacturer so cutting out the middle man likely saved me some money as well.
Disregard this entirely. I read tubular steel and my mind immediately went to round tube steel for the top rails. The Big Tex linked above is square tubing and that would be perfect for mounting any reels, ladder racks, machines, etc.
The Big Tex is a better built trailer from the looks of it. That’s a nice little trailer. And, if it comes with the spare, I’m assuming it does, that’s easily another $150 in value right there. I still think it’s high though but so is everything else.
Good point!
Yes, I meant square as well and I put tubular lol
I’m thinking the big Tex is definitely put together better.
Where did you end up buying yours? Trailers are very expensive around me. I’m just west of Chicago.
The Big Tex has nicer fenders, more tongue support, much better latch on the hitch, better placement on the clearance lights, the nicer square tube top rail, and a spare tire included. It’s definitely worth the extra $180. That’s the one I would buy if I only had those two to pick from. The other one looks like a lot of homemade utility trailers I’ve seen.
I like PJ trailers. Very well made
Great trailers for sure. I think when I buy a gooseneck it’ll either be PJ, Gatormade, or Starlite. The PJ trailers are just built tough.
Definitely leaning towards the Big Tex.
I got mine at a little dealer in the middle of Indiana somewhere, south of Indianapolis.
Dual axle is a smart move. My first trailer was single axle and broke down many times in 2 years on rough country roads. Now i have had a dual for 4 years and it did not break down a single time. I will never buy single axle again. Also the first one had cheap Leaf spring suspension, the new one has Torflex. Worth it 100%.
Also when you get a flat tire (not if but when) you don’t lose control of the trailer on the road because the only tire on one side blew out. The load transfers to the other tire behind it and you can feel it, stop and fix it. Much Safer.
I’m a fan of small trailers. My 4x7 has a ramp / billboard on the back that makes it easy to see backing up. What probably matters most is what you plan to put on it & what the budget looks like.
Ouch! What kind of hitch ball do you recommend? Curt?
