Used belt driven gx390 comet vs cat

Im looking at 2 good condition used gx390s. 1 of them with a comet pump for 750 and another one with a Cat pump for 950. Thoughts from the group? Currently i have a direct drive but looking at belt driven options.

Do you have pictures of them?

Yes sir.

What GPM are they? Looking up the Ge Force II 4040 BD seems to be a 4GPM/4K psi machine going for $1700+ new

4 gpm

I personally wouldn’t start below a 5.5gpm machine based on everything I’ve read here. They do look clean and in good shape from the pictures.

Appreciate the advice. Follow up question. Is the hype on cat pumps real? Its literally the sane machine with a different pump

I’ve never used either. Pure research here (I start washing this fall) but some guys love Cats @Firefighter4hire and some guys don’t. Udor seems to be the gold standard.

Are you building a rig or upgrading?

Currently have a direct drive so wanted to upgrade to a belt driven. Also, im just a weekend warrior so dont have the funds for anything over 4gpm right now.

A GX390 would run a 5.5GPM 2500 psi pump. But I agree it’s an upgrade over a direct drive as is from what I’ve learned here.

Didnt know that. I thought they capped out at 4gpm. So its just a matter of getting a bigger pump so ot reaches 5.5?

GX390 @ 5.5GPM states 3K but expect 2500psi based on feedback in another thread.

Those are some amazing prices and they are only 2 hrs away from me. Thank you so much!

CAT or Udor seem to be the bees knees. :chile:

I ordered that exact 5.5/3000 unit from PWP, but in a skid plate. Along with the 16" whisper wash ultra clean. It arrived 2 weeks ago. Have yet to run it, but it arrived in good condition and the entire process went very smooth. Lori was great to work with.

That looks beautiful. What is the warranty like?
Is that a decent quality pump?

Came with all of the Honda engine warranty paperwork. From the research I’ve done, the Comet pump is a good entry level pump. It’s no Udor, but it should be reliable enough to get the job done. I’m still new to all this myself, so I’m sure others can answer your question about the quality much better than I can. Also, with you living so close to pwp, I’m sure you would taken care of very well if you ran into any problems.
This is the pump that came on my unit

Gx390’s will last forever with maintenance being a weekend warrior, I would purchase the comet pump setup at that price point there equally as good over buying brand new at $1300 gives you $550 towards a udor when the comet wears out. Win win.

Are you sure it’s a Comet pump? It looks like a General HP4040 to me. At any rate, I’d go with the cheaper option, sell the direct drive and see if I can upgrade to a 5.5 gpm pump with the difference. But, im certainly no expert, just a lot of reading time here…
