What yearly maintenance do you guys recommend to keep my trailer running strong.
I paint my floor every year, lube my doors and ramp and check the air in my tires. My trailer is getting old and I’d like to get a couple more years out of it.
Grease those bearings. That may be the most important. You should check those every monday. And dont forget to sand the rust of the hitch and grease the ball. Does you trailer have rivet or screws?
I’m gonna need to buy a grease gun. Thanks.
Dont buy cheap grease either
I use the Lucas red tack #2 on my trailer hitches, and use Lucas marine in my bearings. Also use bearing buddies with protector caps to keep dust off my zerk fittings.
I use the marine grease for bearings too. It’s good stuff.
Pack and reseal the bearings in the spring on any trailer/camper I have ever owned.
I just your last question. My trailer wall have screws.
Check them periodically they will back out over time. I’m saying check every screw but run your hand over seams you will know
Take your knee and bump all tires on every axle or axles to check for play , if you’ve got play take the dust cap off, cotter key, and tighten the hex nut slightly, Play means excessive bearing and spindle wear. Don’t over tighten or you defeated the whole purpose. Use a good moly or marine grease.
I asked the trailer supply/repair shop about greasing the bearings, he said the bearing buddies are not good and make it easy to pop the seals as it only takes very little grease. He said grease it once, leave it alone for a few years.
Maybe not a few years keep in mind you pull your trailer almost every day. Most people who buy them dont use them like we do. It doesn’t take much grease. I do agree with him on the bearing buddies most people tend to out way to much grease in them
I agree you have to grease more than every few years. Bearing buddies are good for people with common sense and I say that loosely. You don’t jam it in till you see grease but most people do and that’s when the rear seal fails. Been running them on trailers for years and I haven’t blown a seal. And we are talking trailers from 14ft up to 20ft that haul oilfield equipment and see a lot of miles.
Like I said common sense comes into play. You have to maintain your trailer just like a truck
He’s an idiot
I say ‘few’, probably meant more like every 2-3 years. They definitely know trailers.
You don’t get much snow where you are at, but if they salt the roads or spray that calcium chloride, you may want to use your PW to spray it down underneath to get that crap off. Oh yeah and oil your cross members. You can use other products as well, fluid film is used by some, and there are others too. I only say fluid film cause you can get it in a rattle can or use a brush. Smells bad, think it smells like animal fat. I use a lot of it on my tractor PTO shaft and telescoping 3 point links.
Make sure that all suspension bolts are tight & in good shape.
Cavity wax is also great on cross members and exposed threads on U bolts and general nooks and cranny’s.
Hey, speaking of which…what is a good lube to stop squeaks from the leaf springs? I’ve been using silicone spray but it only lasts a month or so.
