Tin roof advice

I’m putting up a tin porch roof at my new cabin. Instead of wood post I want to use 3 inch pipe and bolt the roof 2x6s to it. Schedule 40, 80? does it make any difference? I figure 4 poles should hold up a 12 by 12 flat tin roof.

Steel pipe?

I guess, I was thinking iron pipe because it’s cheaper. Not sure if it will hold the weight. I’ve got some steel square tubing but I’m saving it for another build.

How long are the pipes, and what dimensions are you considering for the porch? Depending on dimensions, you may want to use sch. 80. There is a reason pipe isn’t typically used as a structural member.

12x12 ft approx

About 15 feet long on the pipes. 4 feet buried

I would think schedule 40 3" pipe would be plenty strong for a porch with a tin roof. We’re not talking about a whole lot of weight unless it’s a gigantic porch. If you have to buy it and, schedule 80 doesn’t cost much more, might as well get it but I don’t see the need to.

Unistrut. Lol

Old jack posts are good example on how much weight a 3" schedule 40 pipe can hold. If I had to guess I bet a jack post is probably half the thickness of a 3" schedule 40 pipe and they are made to hold up a lot more weight than a porch. I think they say for jack posts one is needed every 12’ when used to support a load. If you plan on using 4 pipes for your 12’ porch you’ll be fine.

That’s so awesome. Did you build that?

600 watts of solar panels, 8 batteries and a kodiak inverter/battery. Off grid with flat screen, fridge and wood stove

That’s awesome. Sounds like you have plenty of firewood cut up already.

Does the wife know about it? haha I guess she would’ve noticed the $3k gone in a heartbeat if you wouldn’t have warned her about it beforehand.

Why not just buy 4 10’ treated 4*4 @$12 each, dig a 1’ deep hole and put some sakrete in and set posts on that. For less than $60 for that and would fit in more with the character of it. Plus then you’ve got your legs to put in a porch.
