SH Going Bad in Truck Tank

We graduated from 5 gal mix buckets to a dedicated 25-gallon SH tank on our truck this year. We seem to be having an issue where any mix left in the tank is going bad after about 2 or 3 days. Had to empty about 10 gallons out this morning after it sat in our 70 to 80 deg shop for 3 days.

Our truck tank is straight SH mixed with elemonator at about 1 ounce per gallon of SH. I do have some brass fittings on the end of our pickup hoses for weights. Could those be reacting with the SH?

Our bulk SH is fresh and is stored inside drums in our shop which has AC and probably never gets hotter than 80 deg. We do a lot of window cleaning too, so we do not always wash everyday. We can kind of guess on how much SH we need for a day, but hate to run short and also hate pouring money down the drain if the excess SH goes bad.

How are you guys with open trailers and trucks getting your SH to last once you transfer it to the tank?

SH in our tanks will be good for a week plus.

Get rid of the brass and just use SCH 80 elbows as weights

I wrapped my bleach tank with a layer or two of the reflective bubble wrap insulation. Keeps UV out and the temperature more stable. No metal in my tank. I’ve had mix in there for a couple weeks at a time with no noticeable issues.

When I first started last year, the brass pickup weight on the xjet pretty much disintegrated when I left it in the bucket overnight. Now I make sure to use plastic pickups.

Thanks for the info guys. I’ll get the metal out of the tank ASAP and also try some insulation on the outside of the tank.

How much sh do you use in a day?

Sometimes 10 or 15 gallons and sometimes we have big days (for us) and use 30 to 40 gallons. I think getting the metal out the tank and insulating will help. We never really had an issue until we switched to the bigger tank and changed our plumbing which included some metal.

Yeah, that weight turned my SH brown after a couple days.

Use a bull head fitting at top of tank, thread a barn on top side door your hose, PVC pipe running to half inch off bottom of tank on the inside

Yeah that’s pretty close to what I have. I have the bulkheads with barbs in them, but didn’t have any pvc laying around that was the right size to go over the pickup hoses, so just stuck some weights on the hose next to the strainer.

Are you guys just letting the pvc pipe “float” on the hose and sticking a plastic strainer on the end of the hose?

You don’t need a pick up hose or a strainer. The PVC is the pick up. Strainers just corrode. Don’t need them

Yep! Did away with my strainer this year when I started pulling less and less soap.

I run a pvc slotted filter on a drop stick through a bulkhead on mine. works great with no issues. you can get everything you need minus the slotted filter at Lowe’s

Where do you get the slotted filters? I’ve been looking and can’t find anywhere.

Here’s one that’s similar. They have different sizes. This is the 1/2".

The Power Wash store has them too and a little closer to you

@Casey_A my mix last me a week+ in my tank but i have been mixing up less than i think ill need and filling 2 5 gallon buckets of SH to bring with me to add to my mix if i need to. Then if i dont use it i just carry it back in the shop. I also have been transferring my house wash mix to my roof mix tank if its sat close to a week and just adding fresh SH to my house wash mix.

Edit: my trailer is not kept in the open. Its kept in a boat garage. No garage door and right side is not fully enclosed its it has a lattice wall so sun comes in and it isn’t temperature controled.

somethings going on mine sits in the hot sun all day. I’ve never noticed a difference in potency sometimes when I’m driving my trailer sits for 2 weeks or so. I mix it with elemonator as well.

Well I ended up re-plumbing everything in PVC. The SH was eating anything that was brass or stainless. There was a pretty nasty layer of sludge in the bottom of the tank. I did add a couple slotted filters from the powerwash store. Probably not 100% necessary but it is worth it to me if they help keep an injector from getting clogged or damaged. Also wrapped the tank in some reflective insulation. I am guessing these changes should improve our SH life greatly. Thanks for all the tips guys!

Looks like a oversized crock pot :joy::joy::joy:. Let me know if it works. I dont really have a problem with mine either.
My roof mix fades in color but ill put some on my fingers and it will get hot and fizz up white so i know its still nice and strong.
