Questions you should be asking an insurance company you may be choosing?

new window cleaning, pressure washing, and gutter cleaning company looking for insurance.

  1. does this cover overspray & for how far away?
  2. does this cover 3rd party injuries only(if i were to get injured slipping on water would i be covered? or whatever other scenario could happen where id get injured)
  3. how many stories do they cover for residential & how many ft up for commercial (like buildings in plazas that are tall but dont have any stairs/stories)

i cant think of anything else. any help would be appreciated. what did YOU ask your insurance policy before signing up with them?

Care, custody, and control exclusion?

If they say they do cover items/property under your care, custody, or control, get it in writing.

Not responsive to your question but something to consider. As a new pressure washer I’ve sought quotes from 3 agents. All 3 have said they can’t insure new pressure washers. Obviously, I need to dig deeper. :fearful:

sasquatch, i have heard this too from auto owners insurance (for business). they were able to quote me $758 with a company called western world insurance company. only thing is they were kind of shady about me asking them questions. seemed like they just wanted me to sign up quick & be done with it.

JD walers quoted me $1,500 for the year and i am new so you could check out either one of those. i just want to make sure im asking the right questions before i go with any one.

Joseph Walters gives us PWRA members a discount. Make sure you ask them when getting a quote. Just my experience. There may be better insurance but that’s who I go through.

I asked Joseph d Walters for the proposal before and after discount and then they went dark. Not a word from them. So definitely verify.

Also, last I checked with JDW they were hawking liberty mutual. Last go around with my agent before sticking with nationwide they checked Liberty Mutual. I have an email from liberty mutual saying they don’t cover pressure washing companies. Lol

Insurance is weird man. If you have it now you actually have to verify you actually do have it.

I had JD Walters for a couple years, through Liberty. Then I switched to a local agent so I could get snow removal coverage. LM basically “ported” (like a telephone number, lol) my exact policy over to my new agent (we had to wait for the yearly policy renewal to make that move, though. Nerve wracking when that falls in November :grimacing:). So I had the exact same coverage, just with the additional snow removal rider.

So I’ve still got Liberty, and have had it verified by both JDW and the local agent that I’m fully covered for what I do.

I’m wondering if Liberty has exceptions for certain regions, or maybe even certain agents.

The policies that JDW writes are very specialized. That’s according to my expert local agent. He was pretty amazed reading through the documentation.

The funny thing is, JDW’s (supposed) reason for not covering snow removal was for “too many claims from their contractors.” That one sort of stumped the local agent (his best guess is that those claims were reducing JDW’s profit sharing cut from Liberty). But I was able to get it added to my policy no problem, and for a very minimal cost, through the local agency.

I think this where it is important to have a good relationship with a local agent. Someone that knows you and knows your business. I would hope it would make a difference IF you ever have to file a claim as well. If you have a relationship with your agent, I would think they would be a lot less likely to hang you out to dry.

Plus ∞. The local agent asked so many questions about what we do, how we do it, and how much of it we do, it was very reassuring to know we were getting the coverage and policy that was right for us.

I think I spent about 10 minutes on the phone with JDW before they had a contract written up. Very different experience (though apparently they do know what they’re doing, based on my agent’s observations)

I think it might go either way. In Brodie’s case, my guess is that Liberty didn’t want to deal with the risk in his region, or with that particular agency’s clientele.

In JDW’s case with the snow removal, I think they weren’t making as much on the profit-sharing portion for that service. But the way they worded it to me, it sounded a lot like they were trying to pass the buck to Liberty.

Amen! Mine is probably one of my favorite folks and seems to genuinely care that I’m getting what I need at the best premium available.

Last time I said something about them it was that they had not returned my initial call in over 5 years. That weekend the owner decided to call me on a Sunday night at 10pm. I don’t need anymore late night calls from them lol. My advice is generally solid and based on experience and observation

There guys are rate raising fools $800 first year with them $1250 the next and then quoted me $1700 to renew the policy. I said no way I never had a claim there was no reason to keep jacking it up that much.and the 3 year was quoted without the equipment rental coverage about $300 policy

My insurance fluctuates monthly but it’s between 25 and 35k a year. Business/vehicle price is constant but workers comp fluctuates as it is based on payroll.

This was just liability. My Workman comp has usually been between 6k and 8k yearly but lovely FL just re class coded Pressure washing to the same class code as roofers. So I’m sure I’m going to have a heart attack when I see that new adjustment in a few months .
