Plumbing help

I use pipe dope and it’s not my connections that are leaking. It’s the cheapo depot pot metal “flanges” that they crimp on. I honestly don’t even know why they do that. I guess the polycarbonate isn’t tough enough to thread fittings into without it? Dunno.

Don’t give up on Bob. He stutters and doesn’t talk on the phone to customers much. Just email and I’m sure he’ll handle it.

I filled out one of their response forms but I’ve had those go ignored before so I guess we’ll see. I like shopping there because they do have good shipping times and the online discounts are nice but I really dislike the refusal to speak on the phone with customers. I understand why they do that because of countless repeat questions from newbies and whatnot but hey that’s where you gain a customer for life is helping them through their infancy stage. And, at one time, I was able to speak with Bob on the phone but I don’t think they even have a number listed on the site anymore. I could be wrong it’s been a while since I’ve looked.

You got it, tapered pipe threads act like a splitting maul into wood. They are trying to reinforce the port and keep it from splitting

Well, I’m no engineer so I can’t comment but something tells me that there’s probably a better way to do that. You oughta see these pieces of metal. I never paid much attention to them because they’ve always worked well for me but holy smokes now that I’m looking at them closer they look like they make these out of recycled pop cans lol

You are right about that it’s fiberglass reinforced polypropylene ie Banjo. I’ve seen those those thin little metal collars. So thin they will cut you

Tractor supply sells some black poly ones and that’s what I grabbed again as I don’t have time to wait for banjo ones. If I’m lucky, the clear bowl on the PT ones will fit the new ones so I’ll have the best of both worlds. Just have to keep the poly bowls on the trailer for when the clear ones crack lol

Like it was meant to be. Have to see if that oring seals it well enough. The Tractor Supply ones use a tapered gasket to seal.

I only called them once, shortly after joining this forum and a guy (maybe 20’s or 30’s) answered the phone and walked me through figuring which DS injector and JROD I would need for my machine. During that conversation, everything was professional, helpful and I didn’t get the feeling that I was a bother to him. Still using same exact JROD on each job.

Yeah, I think they used to have a number listed because I know I’ve spoken with Bob a time or two on the phone but I think they did away with that. Now it’s fill out this form and wait for a reply. One time I never got a reply.

Nailed that one down didn’t ya lol

Nice! I don’t know how I missed that. I’ll see if I can get ahold of them in the morning. I don’t really know what I’m looking for as I don’t really want a replacement of the same thing because it’ll just do this again.

I believe these are Hypro brand. The made in China GP version that has the clear acrylic bowl will crack pulling the threaded portion away from the bowl. I had high hopes for them and lost a lot of money throwing away all the bad ones then even more throwing away all the “good” ones.

They are Hypro. The clear bowl is off of the PT strainer just to see if it would fit. It does but haven’t verified if that oring will seal as the Hypro bowl uses a tapered gasket to seal. I’ll try it with the clear bowl and see how it goes. Luckily, I don’t have to clean my filters very often at all so they may last a while.

Hmm so I got intrigued on why these two new ones leaked immediately and so I started looking at the old ones that I ran last year and the year before. The old ones have that crimped ring just like the new ones do but I noticed the crimps were at the 3:00 and 9:00 position and almost exactly 180° from each other. These new ones the crimps are not even close to 180° from each other and that is probably why they didn’t even attempt to make a seal. Pics below.

New one first crimp at just past 9:00.

New one second crimp at roughly 4:00.

Basically, they’re not crimped evenly. The crimps are roughly 200° from each other whereas the old ones are much closer to 180° from each other. Not exact but closer than these.

Pop the collars and see if the threaded neck is cracked on the damaged one

Unscrew the clear bowl. Throw in trash can.

Way ahead of you lol they just would not seal with the black filter head. I’m not surprised. Two different styles of gasket but I was really hoping to be able to check them at a glance but oh well. Reliability remains #1

Okay, I’ll do that. It’ll have to wait till in the morning. I’m tired and it’s past my bed time
