Need confidence boost - rust removal on vinyl

You are wrong it changes the iron into a soluble ion so that it may be removed by water. I am a hazmat guy I dont need to ask anyone. I’m not sure where you got your info or if you are interpreting it wrong but we may just have to agree to disagree you do what works for you

Also what we call rust is not really rust. It’s a lime or iron deposit

This info comes from years of observation & a chemist who I work with & I don’t care if you are Hazmat certified most competent contractors are as well

Ok well call your chemist if he has any idea of what he or she is talking about they will tell you the rust is a terribly defined compound and that most people think that rust is a ferric oxide which is not always the case especially inthe chemistry world. Your assumption that sh will being out a “rust” is based solely on the fact you think that it’s a ferric oxide. Which occurs when iron is oversaturated with moisture and displaces the O2. What we are actually looking at is a iron or lime deposit that has formed on the vynil and not a degradation of a ferrous metal

Yall sleep on it :joy::joy::joy: cocagirl will chime in tomorrow and settle the debate.

Wow guys, just wow!

Okay, here is a two minute clip that breaks it down and is very relevant to the discussion and where it went.

Bottom line, oxalic makes rust water soluble.

So, the steps are:
1: oxalic
2. Rinse with water, make sure you have rinsed the rust spot well!
3. Do your normal SH wash so the house doesn’t have one spot cleaner than the rest

Of the oxalic did it’s job, and sufficient water was used, then SH shouldn’t have anything to react with there.

Side note, IF you actually had metal rusting (unlike the vinyl before us) you may want to clean it with oxalic and then hit it with some phosphoric. Phosphoric seals the rust, it’s called passivating. It takes some time to get the percentage right but it can stop rust in its tracks.

Now if you had metal (again, not what we have here) and you clean it with oxalic, and don’t seal it, then hit it with SH it will start the rust process again pretty quickly. SH has a high pH and it promotes rusts…while certain acids change rust to be more water soluble.

By the way, not that F9 isn’t fantastic, but for vinyl I’d try oxalic and then I’d try a muriatic based toilet bowl cleaner. Muriatic also takes red rust away and the cling time of the toilet bowl cleaner makes it sometimes the better choice on a vertical surface…just food for thought!

If you need anything else let me know, I’m just an @ symbol away!

Never, ever, EVER put anything acidic in with your SH. Like EVER!!! Check the SDS, is the pH below 5? If yes, don’t add it to SH. If it isn’t, likely STILL don’t add it to your SH. SH does funny things to 95% of what it touches. Only certain surfactants are compatible with it, and they are far and few between.

If you don’t rinse & after oxalic and apply an alkaline then the rust returns, she said it & I know I seen the effect 100’s of times guys don’t always rise after applying oxalic. I guess once you guys have more than 3000 homes cleaned & 10k + condos you will have seen this at least 100 times.

Thank you

oxalic then rinse after its dry & stain is gone spray some

That is not what you said you said to rinse let dry then apply. The long and short is that if you did that and have seen this phenomenon you are doing I bad job 100s of times apparently if you sufficiently wash away the stain or what we call rust that isnt just may and I said it will not come back. You should rinse better next time. Actually I’m sorry and I think we may have gotten off on the wrong foot. You do what works for you and I will do what works for me

most of the time part timers will spray ox & not rinse & I don’t leave things 1/2 way your just a part timer & cant make informed answers. Enjoy your life

Lol, still not Mary, and not sure I helped; but always happy to contribute!
