It looked like this before, pressure washed and oiled it. That Ipe wood is so stinking hard the oil doesn’t soak in or saturate, so I do this every fall for a customer of mine.
Yeah it’s tough stuff. Looks great though. Gotta love the recurring work!
SSE definitely gets an A+ for customer service. And they are even responsive on their fb page.
I stained two boards with TWP on half and Wood Defender on the other half. I keep meaning to cut it open and see what the penetration looks like for each.
I did stick a Graco gun and hose on it since I liked the features of the Graco gun better. And so I also use Graco tips. I use the LP tips to help control the overspray with the oil-based.
I need to dig into the difference in guns and tips and all that. I’ve got a couple basic tips that cover the majority of what I do but I’d like to get some testing under my belt with other tips and equipment to see what its all about.
I’ve had mine for over 20 years, never an issue……
Nice view, where is that?
Be careful if you go with the graco, they have more than one gun and they take different tips. Didn’t know this at first, now I have tips for different guns. It was confusing as all get out, rac x and rac 5 and some other kind. I bought a stain man pole, which I love, but it only took the one tip, not the other, and I can’t remember which one it was. I’d have to go look at it. That was one slick invention.
then on top of that
Graco Uses A Color-Coding System To Identify Tip Types.
- General use tips are blue or black
- Fine finish or low-pressure tips are green
- Tips for pavement striping or field marking are yellow
- High pressure, heavy duty tips for heavy coatings and texture are gray
I don’t spray as much as I would like, always seems to be super high wind when I go to finish a deck. I wind up cutting and rolling/back brushing.
I wish the Sherwin Williams guy would post on here again. He was the one that made the thing for IBS out of cans. Nice guy, miss him being on here.
I did the same thing. I have both because I didn’t know there was a difference.
I’ve used one. They’re awesome. Between that and the 180° swivel on an extension it makes getting all the nooks and crannies so much easier. Especially dog ears on fence pickets.
The color coding seems easy enough to remember. I almost bought a parking lot line sprayer machine thingamajigbob and I noticed it had yellow tips in it. I just assumed they were covered with yellow paint but apparently not.
Yeah, I don’t think IBS ever got that can back. As far as I know, @Greenman just up and disappeared from the face of the Earth. I’ve PM’d him, tried calling SW stores around where I think he lived, had a couple Army buddies see if they could find anything on him. Nothing. Guy just vanished like straw in the wind. Disappointing as can be because I, like you, really enjoyed having that guy around. I know he was dealing with some personal struggles at the time so hopefully he’s doing well. He should still return the can to IBS if at all possible.
North Oregon Coast- Oceanside to be exact
I am interested in going to the all fflp tips (supposedly leave less overspray). As you know, mild wind will take that oil overspray everywhere, which I don’t like the idea of in tight confines. The first SSE conference I went to (wound up sitting with @SurfaceTherapy ), I took my notebook and waved it in the air to see how much stain overspray I would pick up. It picked up quite a bit. Been nervous ever since. With paint I’m not as worried on a hot day. I had some oil go 20’ up a house when a wind and updraft happened, I had 12’ of plastic up. I really want someone to pay for everett’s stuff so I can see how that works, plus you can use it on damp wood which is a big issue in my area.
I’m probably going to SSE’s conference again this year as I want to see about their newer product for log homes. Some people have been talking like they will refer wood homes to me from now on. Chickens aren’t chickens until they are hatched, as they say.
Thanks. I saw they have a special, leaning towards that due to it’s flexibility as both a platform, and paint/tool holder in addition to being a leveler and standoff.
this is the special
Yeah, the oil overspray can get out of hand in a hurry. The small pergola and fence in the pictures up thread are in a neighborhood where I can almost touch two houses at the same time they’re so close together. Plus, they all share an alleyway and everyone’s garage is off the back of the house and people park outside more than inside so spraying any of that was a no-go for me.
Overall, it wasn’t too bad to do by hand. The fence actually still had existing water based stain on it (very, very little. Soaked up water instantly) and I just went over it with the gray semi solid and it turned out really well.
Is it in Springfield? They called me awhile back seeing if I would be there. I think it’s sometime this month or maybe next?
I’ve been to their big shindig in February outside Nashville Tenn twice. They bring in speakers, do some work samples, have some vendors and contractors. This year it looks like they took their show on the road a couple of places. Think they are trying to do the same thing Everett does with mobile trainings to support sales. It is a business so I get it. I realy like Caleb and his crew, they seem nice and have been very helpful with trouble shooting some issues.
The weirdest one I called him about, a deck had a 4x4 looking mark on it about 12’ long. Turns out the handrail shadow made the mark like a mat stain on the deck. It didn’t really pop until it was stained, and when I saw it I about pooped myself. I had sanded the snot out of the deck, because it was rough. Owner wasn’t as concerned about it as I was.
Feb 16-17 outside Nashville.
I’ve never seen that before. Would think the sun moves enough day to day to spread that out. Pretty interesting.
Geez, I get that the off season is the time to do trade shows and whatnot but February??? Too cold for me to go outside lol this is me between the months of November and March:
By the way, you being a wood guy, I’m not sure if you’re familiar with Nick Offerman (the guy in that picture) but he’s an incredibly talented woodworker. I think he’s done a walk-through of his woodworking shop on YouTube somewhere and he’s the real deal.
I would give so much to have that can back
I know it. Still makes me rage when I think about it. Just another reminder that you never truly know people as well as you think you do.
Wow, I just assumed the can was back in your possession. Very, very sorry to hear that.
I really think he was having some PTSD issues and maybe was at a bad point in his life. I’m not angry. Life is too short for that, especially if he’s hurting. I would like to have the can back though. Yesterday made the third anniversary of the last time I saw son. We all went to the fair together. This time of the year is just rough.
