Ladder leveling systems or pieces/equipment/doodads

I’m solo most of the time so no one would be there to hold a ladder. What I currently do, whether it be right or wrong, is go up about 3 rungs and jump up and down, digs it into the ground if soft. If the ladder isn’t solid it would slip at about 2’ off the ground which I can handle.

So the ex-tenda levelers don’t have enough grip on the feet to keep it from sliding?

I’m not an expert “ladderer”. I’ve never wanted to be a fireman, if anything I would have wanted to be a pyromancer. Then I would light er up and get er done…extra crispy.

You like the pivit? What would you consider it’s shortcomings?

Like I said it just depends on the surface. It does fine on moderately sloped dry grass, dirt, wood and concrete. The feet are a grippy, soft rubber and work a heck of a lot better than the hard rubber on the stock feet.

Me neither lol unfortunately even the single story homes here are basically two stories due to the terrain. And half of them have rock yards instead of grass so ladders can be even more sketchy so sometimes going for a walk on the roof is safer than throwing up a ladder.

Tell me about it.

Did you stain that?

Absolutely.

Did it’s baby brother last week. Really liked this gray color. Might end up using it on my back steps. First time using a semi-solid and overall I really liked it.

I’ve got one about this size to do this week.

Did you spray or roll the big one?

What brand of semi-solid?

Mixture of deck pads, mitts, brushes, and, yes, even some sacrificial rags. Would’ve sprayed it but being a rooftop deck it was windy as can be and directly across the street from a new luxury condominiums with windows that I don’t even want to know how much they cost lol. Overall, it wasn’t that bad. Speaking of spraying, what sprayer do you use? I’m due for an upgrade from my HF sprayer. I do have to say, that thing is an absolute beast for less than $200. Unfortunately, they don’t sell them anymore or I’d just go buy five of those.

The little guy was a breeze. If it’s an existing pergola I recommend just replacing the little strips across the top. They take a beating and by the time you remove, sand, stain, and replace you could’ve just hit the new ones with a quick pass and then stain. Saves a lot of time. This customer ripped down their own cedar boards for new ones. They’re putting new trim around the base of the posts that I pre-stained for them so I’ll have to go back and get pics.

I forgot you use SSE.

Yeah, looking at it I would’ve said that spraying was out. Even spraying a deck off a 2 story walkout makes me concerned if I’m using oil-based.

I use a Titan 440. It was my first boss’s from 25+ years ago. His son-in-law gave it to me (my first boss sadly died) and said it needed work, but he knew my boss would want me to have it. $300 later and I was good to go. The thing is 25 years old and works like a champ. So I’d go with that or the Graco 390. Treat either one right and it’ll last you quite awhile.

Find a local place that’ll do repair work on them should it need it. And every few years you just want to take it in and have them do a “tune-up”.

Looks sharp. What brand and color?

Been eyeballing those 390’s pretty hard. That’s probably what I’ll get. Your Titan is probably never gonna wear out if it hasn’t by now lol apparently the newer Titans are not so great but I’ve heard the older models were excellent.

Probably 90% of my stain jobs are done in SSE. Other 10% is Wood Defender but honestly the SSE is just too convenient. They’re one state away, insanely fast shipping, I buy most of my wood cleaning products from them, and I really like the folks that work there. Super helpful any time I have questions and they always call after the product has delivered to make sure everything is good to go. Wood Defender is like yeah, thanks for buying lol

That looks really nice. That Ipe wood is the real deal. Was this just a re-coat or did you do a full wash and strip?

You have never had one of the legs not hold its position on the extenda?? I have never owned one myself but I was using a coworkers about 8 yrs ago when one leg decided it didn’t want to hold me any more

Yes it does the job. Having the leveler on the ladder is way more convenient but I switched to the pivit for my extension ladders because the levelers make it so heavy
