Gun guys come here

Never had a 308. Got a freebie now. Looking scope recommendations. Primarily goin it to be a deer rifle but want short range options. Maybe raised scope to use iron sights

I used a Leupold MK4 on my M14 EBR when I was designated marksman in the Army. I loved that optic. The MK6 is also a pretty nice scope. The .308 I have here at home has the cheap Bushnell that came with it.

Im sure you know the reputation of Leupold. Ive had excellent luck with the few Nikon Prostaff scopes ive had. And i just recent got a Vortex optic, red dot, and very impressed with it thus far.

I would suggest think of See-Thru scope mounts as M22 connections for a pressure washer… dont do it.

i personally dont have a need for top level glass so have always going with the cheaper Offering from a Leupold, which i think are on par with the ProStaff and lower level Vortex.

What kind of ranges you talking about?

I have some vortex scopes. I’m comfortable with see thru sights. Max of 200 yards where I’m shooting so I don’t need anything fancy

That isn’t a ideal tree stand rifle. My 16 y/o cousin bought himself one last year. Its a toad to carry. I would only use it in a box stand or with a rest for an ethical shot. His first “buck” came behind the house at 17 yds and it is pretty loud in a ground blind. He also got is second on public land. He couldnt free hand it for nothing.

If you did use ball valves you may have had the extra strength to free hand it accurately lol jk.

Excellent gun though he is really tickled with his as you will be I’m sure.

Lol. Is not the gun I would have bought and it’s hard to turn down free. In the woods where I’m hunting now I don’t have a shot over 75 yards probably, but my eyes can’t really adjust to iron sights anymore. I thought about ghost rings. Not sure how they would work for me.

.308 will reach out… if it was me Id put a good 4-12x40 on there just to shoot as the rifle is designed for at longer ranges, or spend a few extra bucks and get better scope for defending The Land and get a few more likes if your brother post a pic on social media.

2-7 sounds idea for your place… thats what i put on my slug gun.

I was gonna say, that’s a 1000 yard benchrest gun you have there. It’s not for open sight/deer hunting. Maybe pronghorn on the Wyoming flats.

Would never even have considered shooting a deer with my old .308. That’s way overkill in my opinion.

no softwashing on this thread i see all downstreaming.

With your short distances, have you considered a red dot or holosight? I understand you predicament regarding iron sights. I personally never used anything but iron until recently.

You can try a ACOG or if you don’t mind a bit of complexity, try one of the EOTECH red dots (example- EXPS) with one of the EOTECH 3x flip up magnifiers. Basically you get the red dot and when you need a bit further its got a side mounted sight that you push towards the left and it locks in place with the red dot for magnified zoom.

The more I research the more I am inclined to give it to my brother and let it be his headache.

Bingo. Trade for one of his levers.

I’m close by. I’ll buy it from you for twice what you paid. I’ll even come pick it up.

Lol. Cheaper than dirt have us $1500 credit for advertising but they picked the guns. I got the 308 and my brother got a cowboy 22. I think I’m just going to swap with him. He was trying to do right by me and give my the rifle, but I don’t think it’s my style.

It’s not a terrible rifle. I prefer a Remington 700. But free is free. I’d put a fixed 10x scope and see if I could hit a 2 liter bottle at 1000 yards.

Cant beat free… but also hard to beat a good .22 in my mind.

No disagreement with that. I’ve got about 16 or so. I was on a kick for a long time where, if I bought a gun for me, I bought three more for my boys to each have one.

One of my favorites is the Henry 22 lever. Way too much fun.
