Do NOT give your dog rawhides

ATTENTION: please do NOT give your dog rawhides. We went to the pet store and asked for a good quality rawhide. We were told it dissolves but that’s not the case. Bama is about to have to undergo surgery due to a blockage because of a rawhide.

From my understanding it depends on how your dog eats. If they tend to inhale the food without chewing much it’s risky. If they chew and eat slower it’s ok. If you’re not really sure it’s not worth the risk. Sweet potato chews seem to be more tasty to the 4 legged friends. Easy to make as well. Slice, dehydrate. Done

I hope everything goes as planned with Bama. I’m sure it will. It’s amazing the medical technology available to dogs.

Yes I hope everything goes well with the surgery. We used to always give our dogs rawhide chews until one day a dog lover friend of ours gave us the third degree about how rawhide doesn’t digest well and has even killed some dogs.

There’s many choices out there that are rawhide free. They are more expensive but are much more digestible. We give our dogs bully sticks now which work great.

Thanks for the post. There are many dog lovers on this forum that could benefit from it.

This one was rawhide free and suppose to be digestible. The vet said none of them are. She said that a high percentage of the stomach surgeries they perform is due to these treats.

I wonder if pig ears are in that boat? I give the dogs pig ears sometimes…

They told us that the only thing they give theirs is something called a Kong ball. I’m going to find out what it is.

Kong balls are chewable toys that have little hold and crevices where you can hide treats and peanut butter. The dog has to work at getting the treats out

I think that’s the route we will go. She’s house broke and crate trained but are working on giving her the run of the house. It would take an idiot to come in because her barking sounds like a lion roaring when she hears someone at the door. She’s not aggressive and loves everyone but it’s in her breeding to be a protector. That’s comforting when I’m out at night washing sidewalks

Lacey loves the Kong toys. The Kong classic is the best. I save leftovers, cut whatever it is up, mix it in soft food, fill the Kong, freeze it to make it last longer.

We have Kong’s. Fill it with peanut butter and freeze it overnight. It will keep them entertained half the day!

My dog eats raw hides like nobody’s business. Has for years. I feel like every dog is different with this sort of thing. My dog has also gotten into a trash bag full of chicken bones and never had an issue. Her stomach is built like a tank.

We had a lab that would eat soda cans. But after this it’s not worth the risk

I use to have a lab that absolutely loved raiding the trash can. He would wait till I left for work, climb a 5 ft chain link fence, go do a search and destroy on the outside can, loved ice cream boxes, then climb the fence back into the back yard and be sitting there looking innocent when I came home. We’re talking about 5 out of 7 days for months. I finally caught him red-handed one day and put the lid on for about 20min with him in there… That cured him. I’ve had probably 10 labs and he was the smartest and best… Great dog.

That’s to funny. That’s Bama. I’ve never had or seen a dog with as much personality as she has.

I love the training method. I had a boxer a few years ago. The boxer was actually for wife(ex now) and she lives in the middle of the city. No grass. When the first moved into my place he kept crapping on the patio pavement. I duct taped his butt and lower torso for about an hour. It was halarious. He never did it again. I’ll be on the look out for peta after telling this story.
