I dont need a chainsaw, i have a super nice decent sized one that hardly gets used as is.
But i im considering getting a batteey operated one to keep in truck for hunting/going to farm and great for shooting lanes and trail maintenance… would be useful at times around the house. If i go the battery route ill get the blower as well for the wife to use. I love the idea of using the 18v for use of other normal power tools.
So in my mind i have a few choices.
1- nothing. Save my money
2- least likely and most expensive saw/blower combo (and long term) Go with Milwakee/Makita that use 18v batteries and slowly move over power tools to which ever brand. I dont have a need to move away from the Porter Cable stuff that i have and work fine for me… but wud allow me to have spare set of tools
3- Ryobi… cheap and good reviews for my use. Saw and blower decent price. Batteries arent bad. And would allow me to use batteries on odd tools i wud could use such as air pump, stapler, etc. for cheap.
3- Stihl- my buddy has a few reimbursements that need to be used… easily the best performing saw and blower. if i were to get the saw and blower that use same battery it would only be like $60 more including a second battery. But batteries wud be only for those two tools.
So, let me tell you a chainsaw story. My best buddy Robb had a tree blow over beside his pond during the last storm. He is a pretty big boy, not very agile, and asked me to come down and cut it up for him. He said he had a new chainsaw so I didn’t bring one with me. His chainsaw was an electric one. Generator in the back of his truck and a 100ft extension cord. Work with what you got. I started at the top cutting off limbs. I made about three cuts and a 40ft tall tree sprung back upright, root ball sucked right back into the hole beside the water line and three months later that chainsaw is still hanging from the top of the tree. Dangdest thing I ever saw.
Don’t knock Ryobi just yet, I boycotted Dewalt after they changed battery models and nothing fit anymore. So I went and bought the Ryobi bundle pack 5 years ago , plus a lil weed wacker for my ole pop’s and a hedge trimmer and spot light, so 5 batteries total. I’m down to 3. built tons of stuff with them. Tuff little tools. @Donut…
Let me know if you get a battery chain saw. I’ve been hesitant to get one. But we live in the middle of nowhere and we both carry a lil 16" Stihl in our trucks and used them plenty for trees over the holler roads. But gotta keep up with fresh non E gas and seafoam in them ,or there worthless. I’m interested in a battery saw as well
Oh not knocking them… just a decision on going 18v and get other tools, or spend just a tiny bit more for Stihl stiff cause im getting 30% off anything.
If you get 30% off ,I’d go Stihl then. They are the UDOR of saws IMO @Donut.
And do you want us to all place our order at 1 time or a lil @ a time on here.
Their 18v battery style sucked so I’m glad they updated the design. To be fair almost all manufacturers updated their design. They have adapters to where you can use the old 18v with new tools. They probably didn’t have it at the time you boycotted though.
Their new batteries and tools are so much better than the old. I’ve been using a little 3/8" impact for years, along with a bunch of their other tools, working on cars, wood, etc. Have beat the crap out of the impact, dropped it on concrete from 20’ up, left it out in the rain and it’s still kicking. I even still have the original 20v batteries and they all work. I did have one drill that stopped working but it was a pawn shop buy so hard saying what it went through. I’m guessing here but some of the new tools and batteries I bought are probably 8 years old and I use them almost daily. That includes using the batteries in a weed whacker. That’s a long time for the batteries to still be working. You could probably swim to the bottom of your pond, push the possum scum to the side, grab the Dewalts, charge the batteries, and build a deck with them later that evening. Just be sure to buy the adapter so you can use the new batteries on your old tools.
They even have pruning blades for them that look like they would make pretty short work of a good sized limb.
I guess it kind of depends on how much you plan on cutting. Those blades can get kind of expensive where as a chain can be sharpened and likely last a lot longer.
Does it have to be battery powered? Those Stihl one handed saws are the handiest tool ever made. Super compact and just absolute workhorses for how small they are.
Stihl also makes battery powered saws but I’m sure their batteries don’t work on anything but Stihls.
I thought a battery opp saw might be kinda cool, I got mine in a case in the pickup in the tool box. PITA to get to. Wife has hers bungee corded in the back of her pickup ,but she’s gotta bed cap. But if you have a battery opp lil 12" baby saw, you can keep it inside of the cab behind the seat, because no fumes. And if you have a DC to AC inverter thingee built in or portable, In case of dead battereeahh, Your good right?
Dunno .
Now I friggin want one. Thanks @Donut. Dangitt !
