Wrapping up one project to start another…

Wife and I decided it was time for a new fence in the backyard as the old one was close to original to the house that was built back in 2000. When we purchased the home in 2018 the fence was in poor condition then and it’s only gone down hill since then.
I ordered the materials and ripped out the old fence 100%. Set all new 4x4 and 6x6 posts, ran all new 2x4’s in between each post and the installed pickets. Picked up the welded gate frames this afternoon to work on over the weekend and while attempting to finish last 6 feet of fence line where it butts up to the house I started looking at how the old fence had done so in the same exact spot. The vinyl siding was slightly jarred so I decided to straighten it before proceeding and when I did I had some toothpick sized chunks of wood shake loose. I peered behind the vinyl and was not thrilled…

House was built without a housewrap and the old roof (replaced back in 2019) appeared to have dumped rain runoff down the chimney side. The new roof has a water channeling device up there to prevent such a thing and I believe it to be working as all this OSB was super dry and brittle. Fortunately, it’s only this one small side of the chimney, but it’ll be all of the 2x4’s on that side as well as the plywood there needing to be be replaced. Perhaps on Sunday I’ll get to it. Washing most of the day tomorrow and then I have to fill up a dumpster I rented to haul off all the old fence materials.

If its not one thing, its another am i right?

while you have it open, spray some bleach/sodium percarbonate on the non rotted wood. It might help to keep that black mold from forming. I’d let it dry out before closing it back up. Just a thought. I’d check any insulation too, even though fiberglass doesn’t hold water the other forms of insulation do.

You got a construction friend? I’d hate to buy housewrap for that small a section. I haven’t purchased any in years, I’m sure it went through the roof like everything else. No pun intended with the roof line.

Oh yeah, you could have prestained your fence before install if it was dry.

I appreciate that, fortunately, this is all dry as a bone. Whatever leak it was happened a long time ago. I suspect when we got a new roof a few year back it rectified the situation.

Good to hear and that you looked at it. I had a coworker that spent about 2 weeks in the hospital, black mold in crawlspace. About killed her.

Sucks to do a job, just to find out you have another job to do. Life is great that way.
