Wood deck cleaning

Thank you, finally found a 200 orifice. Everywhere else I’ve looked is maxs out at 55 or 90. The selection for this stuff sucks in canada

Canada. Now I understand. I just throw them on the desk and they add them to my ticket at my local place lol

Yeah, don’t even ask me about chemicals. My first born for some Elemonator…

I’ll send you some but I have three sons already. Don’t be sending me some foreigner to feed and raise.

I feel like I’ve been doing nothing but wood lately. The easiest thing I’ve done is 1 gallon SH one gallon water one cup or so of sodium hydroxide. I mix it on site. I just add the hydroxide slowly while stirring with the downstream drop tube. I’ve never had any trouble with the hydroxide.

I downstream it with a 8 gpm, so about 20:1 wait 15 mins or so the. Rinse with ~1000 psi.

Here’s a before and after of my latest fence. This is after everything has dried.
Start to finish that last section took approx 25 mins including dwell time.

Looks great! Here’s one I just did for my sister. The fence absolutely needs to be replaced but it turned out pretty good considering the condition. She actually stained and sealed it after I left to try to get another 5 years out of it until she can replace it.

Oops. Forgot to mention what I used. That is just 50/50 Dollar General SH and water. No Oxalic or Hydroxide or anything. Used my nephew’s little 1.1GPM 1800PSI electric pressure washer, too. Took forever.

For future reference - The oxalic would have helped with those stains from the nails.

I thought so. I had no clue that project was on her list for me to do or I would’ve taken my rig down there. I keep OA on the trailer all the time and probably could’ve done that job in a few hours. Instead, it took a day and a half!

Thanks guys, so far I really dont like wood it just takes me forever but maybe once I get my process down I’ll enjoy it more. Do you apply oxalic with a pump sprayer?

You can use a pump sprayer or even roll it on with a paint roller. That’s what I do for concrete to keep it uniform but with vertical surfaces the pump sprayer is usually much faster.

Here’s a deck I did on Thursday. I always brighten and neutralize with oxalic. It makes a world of difference. I actually took a picture of the difference between just cleaning and then brightening.

How does it look now that’s it’s dry. The few times I’ve used ox on treated pine it turned out super light, almost gray again. That’s why I quit using it

You’re right. It does lighten it up quite a bit. Maybe it’s only worth using oxalic if it’s being stained? I’ve just always used it so I’ll have to try it without sometime. I’ll get some pictures of the deck above on Monday so we can see it when dry.

Here’s a before and after of a different deck I cleaned the same way. The after picture shows it when dry.

It looks nice. There is no denying that. I just don’t offer staining/sealing decks. I didn’t realize it helps with staining.

I use SH and Ox on wood and hit it with some pressure to take off the grey wood. Seems no matter what I do, I always get a lot of furring and the furring is white as Casper. Even if I just use HW mix on it. I hate wood :frowning:
