Window seals

Has anyone ever had windows fog up after cleaning a house? I have been doing this for about 13 years now using the down stream soft wash method. I had a customer call me the following day saying that 3 of his windows were fogging up between window panes. This is the first time I’ve had this issue.

The window seals have gone bad on those 3 windows. Windows need to be replaced. The windows would of fogged up under different conditions anyway like heavy rain.

It just so happened you introduced a lot of moisture around those bad windows and it caused them to fog.

Been a window cleaner for 11 years see it all the time.

Thank you Thad. Yes that’s what i figured that the seals were probably bad already because one window on that side ( the sunny side) was already fogged up before we began washing. I asked and the home owner informed me the windows were about 25 years old. Unfortunately he wants me to replace the ones that fogged after the house wash and they are not cheap. I was thinking of adding something to a contract about older windows and seals so this doesn’t happen again.

Ouch that sucks. I would try and do research to show that you didn’t cause the seals to fail and you just made them aware that the seals were already compromised.

Yea that’s what I told him, but he still is expecting me to pay. One window is deeply set into the siding so I’m sure it never gets rained on and the other is on a old garage door window. He had been a customer since I started this business as a teenager so I do want to treat him right. I just need to somehow cover my butt in the future. Most of the houses around here were built in the 80’s or early 99’s so if the windows haven’t been replaced I’m sure the seals will be failing soon.

Do you have a company locally that fixes foggy windows? There are companys that install a valve that gets rid of the foggyness. It would be much less expensive than replacing and that company could also explain to the homeowner how the windows fogged up to begin with. I would not wash them again though.

Yes there is a company that fixes fogged up windows. I have never dealt with them, but I did give the home owner their number. I have not heard their price though. Yea I don’t plan on washing his house again unless he replaces all of the windows or agrees that broken window seals are not caused by us soft washing his house and gives me the go ahead with a signature.
