What's happening in Texas, Texans?

I have a 2k lb free choice protein feeder, they are going through 700 lbs ever 4-5 weeks right now. I love watching them, do it’s worth it.

wow, most of that snow looks like a dusting. I guess people aren’t used to cold temps and don’t know how to keep pipes from freezing.

I understand you can’t do anything without power unless you have your own generator and fuel, a fireplace, etc. I hope everyone stays safe and relatively warm.

Layers of clothing, not a big bulky jacket, layering a t-shirt or thermal shirt, light fleece, sweatshirt over top of that, then a light jacket, then a coat. You can dress up or down with that combo depending on the time of day and the temp. Same thing with pants. Same thing at night in bed, sheet light blanket, heavier blanket or comforter etc. A push broom will clear your walks and vehicles (soft bristles only), or a large backpack blower. No need to get a shovel. table salt will clear ice, but calcium chloride or magnesium chloride is good for concrete. Asphalt use rocksalt, it is cheaper but doesn’t melt at colder temps. Clear as much as you can while the sun it out so it dries the moisture and doesn’t re-freeze at night.

Cold is 50% mental the other 50% is physical and you can deal with that. IN the military they used to tell us it was 80% mental, but we knew they were lying.

Thoughts and prayers…

I would have responded yesterday but I did something to my hip and couldn’t walk, better today. Well, i could walk but it hurt like hell.

That tidbit of knowledge came from an old grizzled ssgt. They had loaded all us ruck humpers into deuce and a halfs and drove us down the interstate when it was about 25 degrees out. Of course that little gold nugget came out of his mouth after he came out of the heated cab after we stopped, opened the flap to bark some orders, and saw us all balled up on the floor shivering in our poncho liners. Anyone who has ever ridden in one knows that that tarp does nothing other than to keep people from seeing inside. Being the kind gentle soul he was he had us get our rucks on and run around to get warm. Oh how I miss the military.

Reminds me of the saying we have here in VT:

“There’s no such thing as bad weather. Only bad clothing.”

Hang in down there, everyone :slightly_smiling_face:

Texans here is my personal recipe for ice:
Use a snow pusher or metal blade at an angle and make a path. Since ice is heavier than snow, push the broken ice onto the ice you haven’t busted up yet and push it along the top (ice is heavy). Repeat process. Ensure that you remove any snow from the top of the ice so the sun can work on it (snow can act as an insulator).

This is about 1/2" of ice covered by some snow I removed the other day. Now I have a 7’ snow pusher on a tractor so don’t work as large an area as I do. I used my tractor to push large mountains of the ice off my drive (about 110x35 asphalt and about 35x50 concrete). I have my snow pusher on poly runners with a rubber edge, so it won’t dig up asphalt or ice.

The biggest issue that happened to Texas, other than the ice storm after the snow… was our power grid. The whole week power fluctuated on/off, water treatment plants froze, and a Texas ‘weasel’ senator vacated in Mexico. I was fortunate having indoor fireplaces and running water…never had power for more than 3 hrs the whole time… some just had their water & power click on.

It’s a mess! HUGE claims are flooding insurance companies, as the state thaws out. Definitely, the year for a Plumber.

Hi All. I’m from Houston as well. The cold was one thing, but the real kick in the teeth was the power outage in my area.

Past Monday it was 12 degrees outside and the power shut off at 3am until 10:30pm.

Tuesday, pipes burst in my home and from 5pm until 10:30pm the power was shut off again.

Wednesday with water turned off, it was a mad dash to the local hardware store to search for parts that everyone and their grandmother were looking for (still to this day) to do some quick-patch work so I can turn the water back on.

Wow! Sorry to hear/see this!
