What chemicals for coil descaling?

Hello folks.

I recently bought a spare hot unit. Guy who sold it told me it needs descaling. What chemicals does everybody use to descale the coil innards?

Thanks.

Muriatic acid.

@DisplacedTexan Do you add any inhibitors to the acid to prevent rust?

Nope just flush with fresh water for about 30 minutes afterwards. It’s going to rust no matter what you do unless you have a stainless coil.

@DisplacedTexan What kind of concentration do you use?

2:1 water to muriatic should be fine. Let it circulate for a good 10 minutes or so then flush for 30 with fresh water. I suggest putting a screen filter on the intake hose so that you’re not sucking the debris right back into the system.

Descaling is the quickest way to find a leak in your coil. It’s like a transmission, if you haven’t serviced it before 75k miles, never service it.

My lawn mower at home gets a few drops added every half decade if i don’t forget. Never changed only topped up. My buddies think I’m joking around, I even show them the sludge. Some things just shouldn’t be messed with.
