Water Restriction Variance

I know this varies by municipality but I thought I’d see if anyone has any experience applying for variances to water restrictions? Here’s what I’m working with:

Power Washing Variance

Washing impervious cover such as parking lots, driveways, streets or sidewalks is prohibited during drought restrictions. Health and safety exceptions to this rule may be requested. Unless a variance is requested and granted, power washing without a variance will be considered subject to citation.

To apply you must have a Certification Number with the water department which is required for commercial. By doing this you get a certificate, listing on their website and some fancy stickers to go on the equipment. It’s also highly encouraged to follow their best practices which are nothing about conserving water just waste water management.

I’ve got a couple nice jobs lined up that I’ve put on hold until I can figure this out. I do see a few rigs around town so I know some guys are still serving their customers. The chance of getting noticed by a conservation officer as they call them is pretty slim, but as we all know Karens are everywhere these days and the bigger risk would be some nosy neighbor calling in.

As a new business this is a good lesson in the high cost of compliance.

Why dont you contact your competitors and be up front and honest about why you are contacting them.

It is not a trade secret or anything they would not want to share unless they are doing it illegally or just grumps. Likely you will get a “oh yeah just call sew and sew at the such and such office and they’ll get you straightened out.”

If they decline to “help” with something as benign as standard compliance, remember that but move on. Just be aware that many have a “figure it out for yourself” attitude and if you have not already done your due diligence and are not legitimately stuck at a dead end then it may come off that you are trying to be spoon fed.

Good luck
