Water pump came apart while running

New to the forum. Mitsubishi 6.0hp Pressure washer Help me find out what happened to my pressure washer. So the day before I took out the PW and realized a puddle of pump oil underneath it. I saw it was leaking underneath the pump did a quick Google search found that it could be a SEAL , CASKET or PISTON but before I check all those out I should check for any loose bolts screws etc. I did just that and found all pretty tight except where the leak was coming from . Did a quarter turn of the bolt and leaked stopped. Refilled pump oil with motor oil ( did I screw up there :grimacing:) Cleaned up the mess and let the PW sit till the next day just to be sure. In the morning check the Leak didn’t see any. Started it up just fine allowed it to run for a minute and started using the pressure washer on my car. It was running fine and had good pressure. 5 minutes later boom. Look at the pictures and you’ll see the catastrophe. The whole pump blew off the motor. So first of tell me what happened? Second can I fix it or should I just buy a new pump. Thanks guys.

Seeing that this site is geared more towards commercial guys who are washing for a living, and often live by the “time is money” idea, I’d venture to say that most of the responses you’ll get will tell you to replace rather than repair.

I’m not certain how often you use that washer or what various scenarios you’ll have to use it in, but, if you are just using it as a homeowner then I would just look up a replacement pump that will fit well with your current engine. 4 bolts and a key way are all that it should take to slap a new one on.

Repairing your current pump will likely be more work than you are interested in, but perhaps you are the guy who has to tinker with everything. Where indicated with the red arrow below, I bet that screw hole is stripped out, and, likely are the other three.

Im thinking the oil was the problem. It probably foamed up causing excess pressure internally till it relieved itself. Im surprised the oil cap wasn’t vented or didn’t blow off first. Maybe the pump bolts were stripped out previously. If you can put it back together it may work but it may fail again. Up to you. I would replace with decent pump/unloader combo. A good pump could last a lifetime for a homeowner

:joy: you don’t have a single clue what happened. Stop pretending.

Thanks for the heads up on the forum. Yeah I’m just a homeowner with a pressure washer. I just clicked on the first forum that came up on Google search. I apologize for not looking over the sight well enough . I was just in a hurry to get my issue sorted out. Thanks for the heads up.
The screws look fine not striped this pump blew off broke the casing as you can see. I think I over filled it with motor oil. And it relieved itself. A new pump and we’ll call it a day. Thanks again

That is why I am here master thread derailer. I didn’t look this forum over well was in a hurry. Didn’t know it was for pros like your good self. I’m just a homeowner with a pressure washer.

Oh, that wasn’t directed at you, Tacboy. It was directed at the drunk responding with gibberish.

Your issue is likely not worth repairing. You can get a replacement pump online and, as @PPWofLexSC mentioned, it’s only a few bolts and a keyway on the shaft to swap pumps out.

Unfortunately, these “homeowner” machines are just not built very well regardless of brand. Especially the pumps.

When installing new pump, if it’s not already prefilled with correct oil, be sure to inquire as to what you should be putting in there. Often times it’ll be ND30 which is a 30 weight oil but without detergent in it.
Also, it would be common for new pumps to come with a “shipping purposes only” plug/dipstick/cap that you’ll need to remove and replace with the correct venting cap (should be supplied in box or packing material so check carefully).
