Wasps, nature's Lunatics

(For those of you who haven’t seen my posts, I am new in business, only been up and running for a couple months.)

Had an issue with a wasps nest a week ago, just could not get them to die, full on long distance soap nozzle from about 10 feet away trying to kill them, but they would hit the ground and then just keep coming, couldn’t access the back yard because of the nest location. I spent entirely too much time messing with them. So note to self and I added some hot shot to my tool kit. And thankfully so because today I needed it. Now the first thing I do is get out of my truck, drop my cones out and walk the property with my hot shot. I took out 6 wasps nests! And while cleaning I found 4 more. Holy crap. I’m glad to say I avoided all stings, but I think I’m going to fashion some sort of hip holster for a can of hotshot after today. Any body got any fun wasp or other pest stories? Also, the customer was super psyched that I was able to use my extension pole to remove the old wasp nests from around her house.

Speaking of fun animal stories, I had a snake come out from behind some vinyl siding at me about three months ago, it was just startling. Last thing I expected to happen at that exact moment.

I don’t mess with them. I’m allergic and don’t feel like stabbing myself with an epi-pen and then paying an ER deductible.

Jesus Cristos,

One can buy a simple pressurize wasp/bee spray from HD, Lowe’s, or even a grocery store. We carry two in the truck.

I encounter black racers (snakes if you don’t have those where you live) here and there in July and August. I think they are attracted to the mist. Always scares me, I hate snakes! I remember one occasion I was doing a walkway and I got up to the porch where there were a couple steps. I noticed in my peripheral that there was something just sitting there on the top step but thought nothing of it. As I got the and put my foot on the first step the thing shot off to the side very quickly and I then jumped because I realized what it was. I bet the homeowner and probably a neighbor or two got a kick out of that panic dance scene.

This year has been bad for yellow jackets. I’ve found nests on at least 8 jobs last month. Two of em I actually put my hand into the nest while traversing the roof. Fortunately they were all dormant since it was a cool early morning. One client I warned about the nests right over the entry and found out she was allergic. I went out to the rich and hosed the nests with spray.
I’ve almost gone through a case of spray. Most of that was at my house. Was working in the back yard and stepped on a nest. (Second time I’ve ever done that.) I unloaded 1 1/2 cans into the hole and then came back later to dig it up. Broke through the first layer of dirt and then exposed the second chamber where the rest of the colony was hiding below the insecticide saturated soil. That’s when they got me. Only one sting through my jacket before I emptied two more cans in the nest. Ended up digging out 2 12" hives full of larvae.

Way back in the olden days  we would put a few ounces of gas into a coke bottle and stick it into the opening. The bottle plugged the hole, the gas would drain out, and the fumes would kill the whole nest.
