Want to hire someone, but can't insure them?

Long time no see everybody. I was about to hire someone as a part time technician. Unfortunately, my commercial insurance underwriter blanketly refuses to insure anyone under the age of 24 for driving the truck. It looks like I’ll have to break the news to him that he can’t work for me, but I was wondering if anyone knew any other avenues I might pursue first. Thanks for any suggestions!

Get insurance with a different company with different age coverage policies?

Have you called Erie yet? How about Next?

I have not, but I will now.

someone out here got quoted $700 on next. User error?! Maybe.

For reference, we have a van and 4runner insured, trailer with equipment and PW/WC insurance for about $500/mo through Erie

Dang, that seems very pricy compared to my current premium, which includes my truck, business insurance, and CCC.

I’ve asked multiple agents and found out we don’t need ‘CCC’ insurance. It’s mainly for businesses that have customers drop off their property (such as cars, boats etc) to be worked on and therefore you take ‘care, custody and control’ of it while being worked on at a shop.

I guess insurance rates are based on location risks, I’m sure some areas are triple that rate. Keep in mind that policy also includes a second vehicle.

Agreed, I pay about a third of that, when paid in full for the year, for both commercial auto and general liability. I’m a solo operator with a 3/4-ton truck and a skid (no trailer), and I’ve had no claims. That said, I don’t wash roofs or use ladders, which I think is where the rates really start climbing.

Yeah being a window cleaner I have to use ladders and get on roofs so I’m sure the cost rises

I get that, and it makes sense since the risk is exponentially higher especially with age, but I’m just surprised it’s THAT much more.

What insurance company do you go with?

I use a local broker, currently with auto owners.

Ah ok, I did get a quote from AO but they were higher. Guess I’ll have to stick with Erie, might give Next a call.
