Truck Toppers/Enclosed Trucks

Hey guys, going to be investing in my first truck and will be needing some sort of topper for it. If you have or had a topper on your truck, has it created any challenges or drawbacks you didn’t think of initially? I’d prefer to go without one, but I do not have a garage to store in at the moment. I’ve seen a few set-ups with a topper online here but I don’t see anyone mounting reels it look like.

Thanks for any input!

-it would probably get scorching hot in there even with everything open.
-it would limit the space you could have used in height
-I would bypass the topper and just lock your toolbox, that should be the only thing that can come off/open other than hoses off the reel.
-maybe run a chain through your SC, depends on how/where you mount it.

check out flatbed builds, that’s essentially what you’ll build it like.

Saw one very similar to this a few weeks ago… it was a pretty slick set up.

I realize that didnt answer your question, but i dont see how a canper shell would be an efficient, nor productive set up, due to space and access constraints.

I have a 5x8 enclosed but i dont work out of it, size wise its good for me.

I was actually thinking the same thing with a three way access carpenter top. I like the security but if something needed to be fixed I could see it being a pits. Specially if you are working next to a hot motor

This is outside of the box… but if, and only if, you spend money for a good pull out platform can i see a shell working out well. And even at that, where does buffer tank, SC, and equipment/extra equipment go? With a platform you could get machine and maybe a hose reel, or two, on there… but you just dont have room for everything you need.

There just isnt enough room. I have almost pulled the trigger like 10 times of one of yhe shells your talking about (witht he aide windows replaced by storage???) because its handy, but mainly for my hunting stuff durng season due to having a reg cab truck.

Ill use my little tacoma with a shell, maybe 1-2 times year, for small jobs where i take my small machine and the hose i need and that it. I started out with that and it has a shell and did fine. But once i actually listened yo these “garbage men” here and got a decent equipment it just wont work. If it was doable ppl would do it more often. And dont get me wrong, im as creative as any person here. I love thinking of stuff that could work, sometimes it just doesnt work out.

@SchertzServicesLLC how’s the raptor liner holding up?

extremely well! I have one spot where it was thin when i sprayed it that has a little rust stain. Other than that it looks great. I will be taking the skid out this fall and ill give an update on how well it held up. The real test will be with winter when I haul pallets of salt. My salt distributor likes to slide the pallet in nice and rough…

Good to hear. Think I’m going to make the $100ish investment. Thanks!

Fortunately this is one of my plow trucks so it was easy to build a frame that quick attaches to the plow columns.

I think we broke the rules. lol your youtube channel has been yanked and I can’t remember the other word

Nvm got it thx again

Good input Donut, I think you’re right, if it were workable we’d see alot more guys utilizing a set up like that with a topper. My main concern had been the equipment being out in the elements all the time since I do not have a garage to park it in. Doesn’t really seem to be stopping other guys with truck bed setups though, so perhaps I shouldn’t be too concerned about the equip being out on the sun/rain/wind etc…

It’s not ideal to leave it out all the time. I have a shop I park my rigs in when not in use. But even if i didn’t have the shop I would have the same setup. Its been so nice not pulling a trailer. I will say it did suck when I broke a bolt on my steering gear box on a thursday and didn’t have it fixed until sunday when I had appointments all weekend…

Yes I see a trailer being a pain in the ass, especially here in the Chicago area traffic Most of our work is in the suburbs but now and then we work in the city doing a brcik house or a driveway.

no way would you catch me pulling a big trailer in Chirack. Not that I can’t, but that its too hard to find enough room to park. When I wash in the surrounding cities I always say to myself “well this house would have been a pain with the trailer” just to remind myself that it sucks. I keep thinking about building a big enclosed trailer with fancy lettering and stuff but then I hit reality…

I hear ya there! Close quarters around here. But concrete and brick jobs are everywhere.
