Trailer advice

I got this trailer for a relatively decent deal. It had a dovetail that was a major overhang so I cut it off. My dilemma is I want to shorten it , it had a 14ft deck as it sits. I can cut the very back half off, just behind the fender mount and make it a 12ft deck which should fit snug in garage. Does anyone see a problem with doing that? I cant forsee any problem, but I will be carrying a 325gallon tote, a 500lb hot water Landa unit, and toolbox. Maybe a generator at times, and a belt driven gx390 and general pump. If anything, Ive read with the wheels at the rear corners its more stable. Tank will be between axles, and not sure where Ill put the 500lb landa unit or how Ill mount it since it has no wheels.

If you’re going to put the water tank over the axles, put your unit, chemical tank, and hose reels up front. You’ll want SOME weight on your trucks tires.

I’d suggest putting your tank centered over the front axle. Allot of that weight will still be on the rear axel but like I said; weight distributuon… lol. You do that and that trailer will pull like a dream :sunglasses:

I would see about moving the axles forward a bit. You only want your tongue weight to be around 10-15% of the total loaded weight. Seems like it would be really hard to keep to that if everything but the tanks are mounted forward of the axles.

Centering your water tank over the front axle, or just a couple inches forward of that, will ensure that the tongue weight increases in proportion to the added water weight.

In general, you want your heaviest items as close to the axles as reasonably possible. The reason is they have more inertia (remember 8th grade physics?). If they are too far from the axles (either forward or back) they will move side to side further than the wheels, and tend to pull the trailer in one direction or the other.

Sell it and buy a flatbed truck

New vehicle wouldnt be practical, trailer was only several hundred. On top of that auto ins. I’ll have to think about that one.

If it were me I’d paint it put the tank over the axles. Put the hose reels on the back. If I remember correctly Landa’s fuel tanks are on the right side so I would put the pressure washer about 18 inches in front of the tank and the tool box at the front. My washer is at the very front of the trailer and it pulls fine

No matter where he puts that tank hes going to have the surging back and forth, because water shifts and moves around. If hes to heavy on the axles and not heavy enough on the tongue, the trailer can potentially un hitch from the ball… just be careful @Redjess… like alex said, 10 - 15 % maybe a hair more depending on the truck you drive!

That’s a good point about surging. But if your hitch comes off because of that, you’ve got other problems. Always use a locking pin on the hitch clamp

Baffle balls or some drainage pipe would be a good idea to cut down on sloshing

Agreed! Locking pin or padlock lol. I’m aware of the baffle system tho, I got 5 baffles in my big 9 thousand gallon tanker lol, you should feel the surging in that bastard of a stepchild :sunglasses:

Im probably going to resell it, it so wide the wife is giving me trouble over garage space. And i don’t like the idea of paying to store it. But we’ll see, I may just shorten it instead.

Ok, thanks for all the info given, I resold the tandem. It was too much trailer right now. I bought this instead, pending on height as it needs to fit inside garage. Let me know what you guys think, same equiptment. Im aware of the drawback of ramp style doors, but that stays for now. Landa MHP unit, 325 gallon tote, a rollaround 4k 4gpm unit, a 5.5gpm 3.5k unit on frame. The unit on frame should stay mounted on floor or build a shelf for it with storage under it?

5x10 box 6ft ceiling. Everything about the frame looks dang near 1/4in. So maybe 3/16?i really like it, too bad its not just 1/2 foot wider with true barn doors.
