This thread is about smoke'n!

What is the best smoker to get for a rookie? Electric? Offset? Upright? Just looking to get the best results. Don’t need anything big or fancy but the option to use charcoal is a must. What is your set up? And favorite recipe?

Pellet smoker grill. Makes smoking super easy. Just smoked a brisket overnight for memorial day and everyone said it was about the best meat they ever had. A good bbq rub and salt and pepper.

Weber smoky mountain if want use of charcoal.

Have an offset that i said same thing, use of charcoal as option… i didnt get a super expensive one but quickly got an electric Smokin-It model 1…. Havent touched the offset. The mode 1 has put out amazing food and is basically an easy bale oven. Temp does up as high as a pellet, but all i cook are ribs, butts, jalapenos, meatloaf, and will start some burgers and finish on gas grill sometimes.

Model 1 is perfect for me/us. But i had to cook bbq for a party of ~60 and i had to cook at two different times… first time cooling more than 1 butt at a time so no reason to upsize.

Pellet grill has no appeal to me, use my grill to grill at hot temps (charcoal or gas) and too many things the break in my opinion on those pellet grills.

Thanks for the great info gentlemen! I actually used the search bar because I know there are some awesome chefs around here. I’d love to hear from @Firefighter4hire on this one.

I went to pellet smoker and never looked back. I don’t have time to be chained to the smoker for 12 hours like I used to. Also was a huge fan of charcoal in a warm climate. Nowadays I’m about that propane life too.

No need for that kind of language around here. Zero shame.

@TheWizard when it comes to BBQ i only cook with wood. Now real charcoal is ok also. I prefer a offset cooker with a water pan. I also perfer a vertical smoker over horizontal because of the temperature range.
