This looks like a roof from HECK

Just wanna hear some thoughts. This should be a good discussion lol. Homeowner thinks its soot, but I think its rust from the sheet metal around the base of the chimney. I dont think SH will even do anything because it dont seem to be any kind of organic stain. I guess I’d like to know what some different approaches would be from all you roof veterans out there.

Muriatic acid

If you think it’s rust, try Oxalic

I’m thinking maybe attack the stain first with f8 from a pump sprayer, then after do the roof like normal.

I would clean it as normal and then test the stain

That’s rust and about $500 for me to even mess with that spot… They not willing to pay, walk away. That’s specialty work. Doesn’t include cleaning rest of roof.

Do not mix Oxalic with SH

Yeah I know I kinda had a blonde moment there. Hahaha. Cant mix caustic with acid. Bad news…

Muratic acid in a pump up will have that gone faster then you applying it. Straight 31% hydrochloric acid… rinse well be applying the SH or you’ll be sleeping up on the roof

QSE roof cleaner sold by cleaner today.com
This stuff is great.
Spray on, let soak, low pressure rinse

I have used it with great success.

Didn’t work on my roof, didn’t even come close. I had to go buy some fresh SH from the pool store and make a hot mix and got instant results.
Don’t know why I fell for that snake oil. Guess I wanted to try something different. Lesson learned. I thought it would have worked because when I was mixing it up that solution got hot as soup on a stove. I thought it was going to melt the plastic spray bottle.
Didn’t work on my black mold streaks. I had enough to do 2 applications the same day and plenty of dwell time.

Snake oil is abundant in our industry

Was that mean to work instantly or over a few months?

Should have listened to what my father told me. “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.
Could have bought ten times the amount of SH for what I spent on that snake oil kit.
Been using SH all my life and I had to go and fix it lol.
My opinion, QSE and roof ox is good as bull butter.

It was supposed to have some noticeable improvement when you use it and then over the next few rainstorms. I had enough to do two applications which I did. And after several rains it didn’t improve any. Not the slightest.

Well that’s the price you pay to be a pioneer. I love this forum because there is great peer reviewed methods and tools that work.
SH is king

True that, SH is King! I was surprised about the sprayer. I was able to stand on a ladder and spray to the top of my roof about 25 to 30 feet away. The mix did have good cling time to it and not much run off at all. I purposely sprayed some plants and grass to see what would happen and it didn’t burn them at all.
