Frankly I don’t want to deal with a moldy hose all the time or worry about connections leaking. Right now I have a massive Neverkink 3/4" that weighs 25 pounds, but I’m considering a 5/8" of the same type which is 15 pounds and easier to handle. I’ll mostly be running to my buffer tank.
Before I do that, is there anything else I can consider?
Perhaps how long it will last you. My buddy and I run 5/8" i.d. rubber heater hose in 250 psi wp, his is Dayco I beleive and run Gates. We run 150’ lengths on all the trucks. His hose on his three trucks has held up 42 years and my four trucks have been going about 18 years. I’d guess Tractor trailers hit them about 2-3 times a year
I really like the continental black hose from Home Depot. Never kinks or gets stiff. I run 5/8” go through the reel and never have issues running out of water. 250gal buffer and 8gpm machine.
Personally, I’ve never been as happy with any hose as I have been with Flexzilla…never had an mold or leaky fittings (if I did, I would assume it was my fault for not having replaced gaskets as needed) I was using Always-Kink myself at first, then I switched to Mean Green (they stopped making it for a reason), then I switched to Flexzilla, and that’s all I’ll ever use as long as they make it. As you stated in your opening post “it seems to be standard”, and it’s the standard because it’s excellent hose…Why waste time and effort trying to dodge that fact? Just my opinion, of course.
Started out with some of that red Never Kink Pro, suuuuper heavy duty hose and I never had any problems with it except the fact that it weighed a ton. Switched to Flexzilla last fall and I LOVE it. Mine has been run over by dozens of cars and even a couple of semis and dump trucks and haven’t had the first sign of a leak. Much easier to pull AND reel back in. I’ve also not had any problems with mold either…and if I did, I’d hit it with some hot HW mix and call it a day. I would honestly stick with what works and not try to overthink it. Just my two cents.
I use 3/4" hose from Harbor Freight. It’s like $30 for 100’. Holds up to dragging across concrete pretty well but it’s also stiff when cold so that’s a pain. At that price though it’s hard to beat for me.
Also has decent fittings and the spring protector thing for the ends.
Give in to flexzilla. Once you do you will never go back to heavy tanglin screamin cussin stupid kinkin crackin splittin dumb rubber hose. I got 3 100’ on amazon for like $52 ea. I think they went up a bit but still cheap. 100’ weighs less than 50’ of that HF hose. Sooooooo nice when reelin it in.
Oh I want to. Bad. But I’m still starting out and money is not flowing like the Nile yet. I couldn’t find 3/4" flex on Amazon when I looked but I’ll keep an eye out. I need 200’ as an absolute minimum. I’d feel better with 300’ but were talking about $400 for that much. From Lowe’s at least.
I fought the “cheap-o” in me and bought the Flexzilla from TSC…absolutely the best! My hose reel weighs 1/2 as much as it used to when I had the garden hose from our house on it.
There’s nothing wrong with other hose, it’s just that Flexzilla is much lighter and easier to use. If money is a problem, use regular stuff and then treat yourself to awesomeness as soon as you can.
One suggestion (based on my personal preference and experience…others may disagree) Get 50’ lengths, especially if you have a lot of wells in your area. The shorter length will sometimes make a difference in how fast you can feed your tank, and one coupling in a 100’ run of hose won’t affect things enough for you to notice.
