I just purchased a bunch of bleach from my local Smart and Final store and did a bleach strength test on it using chlorine test strips. Surprisingly it showed that the 8.25% I got was actually 8% or better, not all degraded like I thought that it would be. I was expecting 6% or something. Just thought that I would share.
I have never heard of bleach strength test strips, what are they and where did you find them?
Found them on Amazon.com and they allow you to measure the strength of sodium hypochlorite in parts per million which you can easily convert to a percentage, give or take a half percent.

Pretty cool, thanks for the share Jason
Your pool supply should have those strips as well

Concentrated store bought bleach should be somewhere around 8% while regular store bought bleach is around 6%. Problem is, unless your supplier is overcharging you, current prices of store bleach aren’t that far from 12.5% SH these days.
I buy cases at a time from .99¢ only store. I’ve never tested it but only once in about 5 gal did I notice at was week. Most of the time it smells stronger than others. I’ll get some test strips and see what it is and let you know. Oh I buy it on the day the store gets their freight.

Just because the store just received it does not mean it did not sit on the shelves of the wholesaler for months or weeks
If you really want to test the strips, try them on some fresh SH that should be between 12 and 15%
FWIW, I depend on the finger test, it never fails me
For sure. Hot bleach will be…well, hot.
Agreed. I’ve been to few stores and this on sells several pallets a day and the single on the shelves have been out during the summer. I’m guessing with the turnover that it’s not been sitting long but I could be wrong. Also heat will cause it to dissipate as well
