Soft Washing A Commercial Building

Hey guys,

I have a question, so we are scheduled to wash a building next week, Ill be washing the building down with a weak house wash mix and after that we are going to water fed pole all the windows.

However, the glass has a sticker on it saying “low E side” so I’m assuming it’s exposed towards the out side.

Will a weak mix damage these windows? Of course not letting the mix dry and all that.

And is it okay to WFP?

Man, I’d post that on the WCR sister forum. We only have low-e here on Pella inserts and I can tell you it doesn’t like anything rougher than a window cleaning mop.

Don’t like those Pella low e that are inside the window that you have to open to clean it. And yes, mop only and nothing rough on it, you’ll destroy the coating. I won’t do that type anymore, too much trouble and usually damaged by someone that didn’t know how to clean them….

Not even water fed pole? Usually the water running keeps the glass well lubricated

Watefed pole is perfectly fine… as long as it’s nylon bristles & not a wool pad of any kind, with a rinse bar

Ok, a few thoughts.

One, generally on both commercial and residential the low e coating should be on the INSIDE between the double panes. It is a coating meant to help with energy efficiency, nothing else. It is delicate and does not stand up to environmental and cleaning pressures. The most common exterior coating, which is not low e, though not very common, is self cleaning glass, which is only made by Anderson I believe. Stuff is junk and a bad idea but is only used on residential that I know of. That is the only exterior coating I know of that is supposed to be there.

If for some reason the low e was put on the outside I would think the client should pursue that with the glass installer or manufacturer or both. I would advise them of such and not clean it. Too much risk. Most dirt granules would be much harder than the coating and likely to scratch it all up…

If your unsure I would do a test window and check it from all angles in good light and same from inside to make sure you don’t have a ton of fine scratches in direct light.

Also check the manufacturers website for information on how it was made and cleaning procedures. Email them if you need too so you will have it documented.

Okay, So I called the manufacturer.

The sticker is only for installation reference, the stickers need to be out side telling the installer it’s going in correctly. The low E is in between the panes and clean as usual

So, We should be good to go.
