I was making a batch of sodium percarbonate this morning in my new 2gal pump sprayer. I boiled some water and dumped it into the sprayer tank, did some other prep work, then when I was about to leave I added the SP beads into the water and it started foaming and smoke coming of it. Assuming it had taken a chemical reaction I did not put the pumper on and disposed of the liquid. Usually haven’t had an issue mixing SP, what would cause this reaction? The boiling water? The new pumper?
I used warm water not boiling, I only used it once tho. Did you have anything in that sprayer before?
hard to say
3 states, liquid, solid, and a gas. You used boiling water, so you raised the temp of the water very high, then you allowed a chemical reaction to occur which normally causes heat, so I don’t know what you did with your science experiment. what type of pump up you used, they aren’t all the same, most people opt for the el cheapo model. Some can, others cannot, handle certain chemicals. If there was anything in the pump up the chemical could have reacted to that.
The resident chemist might know, but I can’t remember her handle, just that her name isn’t mary.
Out of the box Chapin 2 gal. Didn’t have this issue with my 1gal Chapin. Had a few decks to do today so I figured I’d get a bigger sprayer. Landed at customers place and they have a dug well so I had to run home and grab my buffer tank… big rookie mistake. Water is cooling at the moment and I’ll remix shortly. Assuming it had something to do with the boiling water.
Use slightly warm water, and that’s just to help it dissolve, regular water will work fine - you just have to mix more thoroughly. the bubbling and foaming is natural - reason you never want to put in a tightly sealed container. ALWAYS leave the lid a little loose initially or leave some room for expansion. I have a friend who mixed up a backpack sprayer full doing a large fence, shook it up to mix it up and it literally blew up about 30 sec later. Think bubbling action on hydrogen peroxide.
Typically if I’m not mixing a lot to run thru my 12v, I’ll use a backpack sprayer because it’ll work fine with very loose lid.
