Sodium Hydroxide Additive

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone had an idea or tried an additive to their sodium hydroxide mix to help it stick better, such as the pasty or gel like paint removers on the shelf.

A few times last season I had a hard time getting my mix to dwell long enough on vertical surfaces such as deck spindles to be effective.

Just a thought before my season starts here shortly! Thank you for your time.

try soap, if that isn’t working, try thicker soap (like roof snot or some other brand of the same thing). If you want a true vertical paste, try wall paper paste, but your aren’t spraying that - apply with brush. Look, you gotta think outside the box here and tinker with the mix to what works for your needs and the needs of the surface. Not all soaps (surfactants) are the same, so be careful what you spray where. Some soaps - detergents - are rough.

Misting is needed, because it is vertical it will tend to dry quicker than the horizontals where the water lays.

I should start charging for these nuggets, maybe make a book and sell it :grinning:

Enough with this spraying water stuff, I think you found your calling! Thank you!

Ended up coming up with a mixture of SHyd and Hydroxyethyl Cellulose. Worked great for stripping paint of cedar shake house.

Nice one. Why did you pick this particular substance, and did you also use any surfactant? What was you mix ratio if you don’t mind me asking?

I ask about the surfactant because I don’t know how this cellulose would rinse.

Hi, reached out to a local chem supplier with the idea. I’ve researched some SDS’ as well to come up with a mixture. I’ve just used a local surfactant that has worked well with my SH. 1 cup SHyd, half cup HEC, and a few other ingredients to help penetrate and disperse the solution.

Thanks. Sorry for the 20 questions but did you chuck in any butyl? I find it helps the hydroxide work better on film formers. I appreciate the fact that you did some experimentation. A lot of people just buy whatever the supplier sells.

I enjoy coming up with my own flavours, and get to save a lot of money too. Not much to chose from in Canada. Very strict chemical regulations, Butyl Glycol is somewhat hard to get, it’s in a grey area, legal but monitored. I was going to use propylene glycol as it is offered from the chem company I deal with. I will experiment more and send you a bottle! Haha also working on a good acid for rust removal for all surfaces especially gelcoat on fishing boats. Still trying to come up with a solution for those damn barnacles!
