SH tanks / Transporting SH

Hear about the exterior cleaning contractor in Georgia who got fined $55k in February for hauling bleach in an illegal manner?

It’s worth knowing that there are laws which address how much you can carry, in what kind of tanks, with what kind of labeling, and with what kind of paperwork.

Basically, without a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and HAZMAT endorsement, you can carry up to 100 gallons liquid sodium hypochlorite if its in approved, stamped DOT/UN tanks, properly labeled (it’s a Class 8 oxidizer), and you have a Bill of Lading (BOL) on hand.

(Hint: literally none of those rectangular poly tanks that I see everyone using are DOT/UN approved).

(Also, any SH tank is illegal once you drill holes and put in a bulkhead fitting).

It’s called the Code of Federal Regulations (CFL), and section 49 is what you want to get familiar with. Links in the description of this video.

Hope that helps somebody somewhere. Everyone else, watch out for any DOT/EPA officers having a bad day.

Well…that’s not good. Thank God I lost all my tanks in a boating accident.

so you could rock a drop stick and a 55 gallon drum without putting a bulkhead fitting? In your video you mention that you can carry up to that amount but only in 8 gallon or less containers? Ill look into the CFRs.

Thanks for the heads up @OutsideCleaner . I appreciate your informative videos Nate. Hope all is well.

According to the DOT trainings I’ve gone through, the second you placard any chemical, you are required to meet the hazmat CDL requirement as well…seems to be a lot of conflicting info out there.

This is very interesting- do you have a link to an article you read? I have been looking but can’t seem to find any news.

Jason, in my post here, I’m pointing out the DOT requirement that SH containers be labeled.

I said label, while you’re saying placard. Labels are put on containers, while placards are put on vehicles.

Under 1001 lbs, you don’t need placards. Here’s that exemption in the CFR ( 49 CFR172.504(c)).
