We just got a request to clean and seal a fence and the customer wants us to provide the sealer. I am on using Armstrong Clark, but I don’t really know what to do about color. Do you guys normally suggest a clear sealer, present different stain color options, or what?
I used to buy several pressure treated fence boards, cut them into 4 or 5 inch lengths and stain them with the colors we offered. I’d write the color names on the back and leave them with the customers when I did a quote.

I have done more than a few wood restoration jobs and I have never applied anything other than semi-transparent cedar. It is very neutral and goes with everything.
Take photos when just starting out and build up a portfolio. Note the wood species and stain type/color used in each photo. You can then show customers different colors on real wood.
Also, at least A/C and Ready Seal, provide sample bottles/cans of their stains. We often apply a few selections to customer wood after stripping/cleaning. Carry a hair dryer in the truck to get the wood down the 14% or so before applying.
