Hey Russ and other guys here-- is it possible by adding mufflers to your Powerwashing engine to make it run quieter can cause a problem with the engine?
Some of us run into noise issues while running our engines at night and aside from putting our Powerwashers in an enclose trailer or vehicle what do you suggest in how we can lower the noise volume on these engines?
In my case we run a 30,34 & a 40hp Kohler engines.
The back pressure is something I would be concerned about. The thing is I don’t know enough about small motors to where I can match up larger mufflers to it without causing problems to the engine. I hate to try something and just “hope” it works. I can’t afford problems at the job sites.
I’m going for it!
I’m booked for 9 am tomorrow morning at my muffler shop. Talked to the tech and he said he is going to get a small muffler mounted for me. He said it will be a bit more back pressure but he doesn’t think it would hurt the motor. We’re going through the floor of the van and out the bottom for the muffler to connect. Should be interesting! I’ll post pics of my whole E 250 custom build when the muffler is mounted!
Alright guys, here it is. I’ll post more pics after I test her out. Just leaving the muffler shop now. $200 hopefully well spent. Going to test it out as soon as it’s off the hoist!

Hey guys. My name is Keith Cook. I am a full time mechanic. I hold 11 certifications and am certified in 3 major areas. I am Master certified, including exhaust system specialist certified and Advance level engine performance. So I can help with some of these questions.
Car muffler, not such a good idea. What you need to do is…somewhat simple. Factory OEM crotch rocket muffler. They will work perfect with a mid to high displacement small engine. They are very quiet, and will not cause any flow issues. They’re a straight through design (most of them, anyway) and are very quiet. The FIRST thing everyone does when they buy a new CBR, GSXR, ect is take the factory muffler off, and add an aftermarket one so they’re louder. This means they are available everywhere, for rather cheap. Craigslist, ebay, are flooded with them. They’re small, compact, quiet.
Put one on! When you do, you’ll then realize there are a lot of other loud noises besides the exhaust. These small engines are not quiet by nature of their design. Quietening the exhaust with a bike muffler helps a ton, but it will never be "wow, that’s quiet.
Ran my first job today, all most all of the exhaust noise is muffled and re directed but the actual engine noise is what I am hearing now. Not bad at 15 feet for a conversation. If you close the side van door and run a fan out the back I’m sure it would be really quiet. I don’t seem to have any power loss or anything of that matter as of now. Big resi job booked tonorrow for more testing
