Run 12v off of 7 pin trailer connection?

Is this possible? It has a 12v positive and negative connection that is used to run lights and charge RV batteries.

Depends on what you’re using it for. A couple extra LED lights? - sure, no problem.

A fatboy bandit, or the starter on your machine… forget about it. Won’t provide the amperage you need, and you’ll blow a fuse.

So I could potentially use it to charge the 12v’s battery?

It would let you recharge the battery on your rig but only to a very limited degree and it will not power anything other than lights. If you have AGM batteries the alternator never fully recharges them, the finishing voltage is too low.

Yes you can “maintain” 12v batteries but charge from a full drain, no. If you want to charge or run a 12v system and keep it full look up my thread for wiring a battery. I have a video on my YouTube channel on how I did mine.

Thanks for the information gentlemen. Have a great weekend!

I saw a video where a guy used a battery isolator and big fat battery wires back to the trailer. Alternator charged it. You have to plug in the trailer twice. First your 7 pin, then the two battery cable connects like on a forklift. I’ll try to find it.

Might have to upgrade the alternator.

There’s been a few times when either my 12v battery has ran out of juice, or I forgot to charge it. I hook up jumper cables to my 12v hot water skid. It doesn’t charge the battery but it certainly runs it in a jam. Waste gas running the skid, but it works. This isn’t relevant to the post, but I threw it out there anyway.

I get those off of UPSes. I forget what they’re called. Maybe Johnson connectors?

We use those types of connectors on a few car trailers with winches mounted on them to keep the battery charged up and let me tell you it is a noticeable difference between running a dual battery diesel truck and a single battery gas truck. I’m certain it would be perfectly fine with a 12 volt pump.

They’re Anderson Power Pole connectors. Don’t buy the off brand as they are junk. You’ll need a crimp tool for the pins
