Restarting Father's Business - Advice

Hello all, first time on here. I’m going to spare you the long details and get into the main topics. Father ran a PowerWashing business (mainly fleet washing) for 25 years after buying it off his dad. He was doing amazing business with 2 large accounts and the occasional smaller accounts 1x month. The man NEVER touched foot into the residential washing as it was “too boring”. Never hired additional workers, Never looked to expand on accounts after obtaining another 2-3 that would see 1.3x the profits of his main 2. We ended up butting heads in 2019 because he never put money into the “business”, which I use loosely as he never treated it as one. Ultimately, he had to close in 2020 after being undercut by a new washer (no idea how he’s making money and only “soft washing” trucks).

I know how to wash the trucks, I understand how to obtain accounts and understand the business logistics. However, the man never actually gave me advice. Never properly told me how he priced trucks (still don’t know to this day because he told me I didn’t need to know this), never informed of which chemicals he used and so on. So there is a lot that I still am left on the dark on. Little brother and I (who also worked for him) will be starting it back up. Him and I WILL be taking on the front of residential washing as well as commercial washing moving forward also.

Not asking for all the secrets. Any form of guidance or advice for two brothers looking to take something that was going great to new strides with ownership and determination. Appreciate any comments in advance, thank you.

People here can tell you a ton, but just one outside the box idea, if you have the records of where he bought any of his stuff, those local people will probably be a great resource to you for what he was using, etc. For house washing, all the info is here already, the search bar is probably going to be your new best friend

Thanks, been reading through so far for residential washing… really stuck on Fleet side of things. Reading through, I can tell theres an amount that is not too found on it but something I will be doing. Sadly, not many expense sheets with actual breakdowns of chemicals he used.
Nonetheless, thanks for the reply!

Search for the super long fleet washing thread.

It’s gold.

I meant if you could check bank accounts or check logs, card statements or whatever and find out where he bought stuff…then you could get some insight from those people. There can’t be all that many local supply places, call around and see what you can get from them in terms of info either way.

link?

awesome, do you know the page name?

No, hopefully @hotshot will chime in.

Joined it and it’s just my name. Still figuring out details for starting a new entity and transferring assets from his to mine. Trying to figure out logistics, pricing as well as if he operated two step or not (don’t believe he ever did). So trying to make sure I understand the process fully and what equipment he has to run it. Have connections from people ready to get me washing. Luckily, having someone people loved washing their trucks helps you start quicker.
