Removing rust in plumbing

How should I remove any remaining rust from my hoses, hose reels, and a whip line? I got all new equipment other than hoses and reels, and I’m wondering how I should flush these out. Also why do you guys think this happened to begin with? Is this truly just really hard water?

It is storming in my area all day, so I have some time.

First of all, either stop using cheap brass fittings and go with stainless, or just plan on replacing them often. Second, acids will remove rust - it is a matter of the strength of the acid and the length of the dwell (science). Acids will react to some metals, so it is not a perfect solution.

Why are things rusting? I’m not there, so here are my guesses:

  1. you let water and air sit in your metal fitting, that will rust
  2. you are getting irons in you water supply
Don’t forget, you are working in an industry that uses corrosive chemicals to clean with. Metal corrodes if bleach is left on it.

You asked a question the other day about your metal rusting, that was condensation hitting your metal. Water + metal + air = rust. You can either treat the rust or do the myriad of things people try to do to eliminate rust from occurring. People have made fortunes selling products that inhibit rust, coatings or encapsulations that break the metal air mix and prevent rusting, or the 1000’s of products to remove rust.

When you have some time, start reading about rust and it will be something you can take with you throughout your life. It will aid you in making more informed decision in the future and help you to avoid the snake oil remedies often found in the marketplace.

Good luck to you.

Throw this away.
