Pump Sprayer Safety

Updated post about the colored pump sprayers with the color chart. Just an example of what we use. We never change the chemicals in a pump sprayer ever. We carry an extra empty pump sprayer for something new if needed. Changing chemicals even after rinsing can cause a serious risk of injury or even death. Be safe and educate yourself. We chose this method as we have employees and multiple crews. I can’t be everywhere at once and I want my people as safe as they can be. We keep safety glasses, gloves, eye rinse kits (used several times) and respirators on both rigs.

Place a strip of painters tape from top to bottom when painting to see your chemical level clearly. Remove when dry.

as noted the SH is inside the box, it was removed after the pic as you don’t want to store SH with acids due to creating an explosion if they mix

I don’t have that many…yet, but I put white duct tape on the handle and mark it ‘efflo’ or ‘barc’ etc.

I’ve had issues with various methods rubbing off or becoming unreadable. When I am not on the trucks I needed something to keep people safe.

I tried sharpies, label makers etc.

I can see that happening with as much volume you guys do.

Someone has the OCD.

if you want non jaggy edges on your tape line, remove the tape when it is still wet and not dry. When it has set for a little bit remove it and the line will be cleaner. When it dries it has a tendency to lift up.

I don’t get the whole color coded pump up thing, but to each his own. I don’t work with anyone so I don’t have to worry about employees or helpers messing up and getting hurt. This is just a side hustle for me and I probably wash about 1/8 of the houses you do a year. I take my time at jobs and I’m not in a hurry to get to the next gig. Of course I don’t just rinse out the tanks, I also rinse out the hose and sprayer (upside down with the nozzle off makes it go quick. Many times I ask my customers if they have any weeds they want me to try and kill, that is where the pumps get dumped.

I’m totally off the trucks so it was a move to provide some guidance and safety when not there.

Good advice on the paint tape and removing when wet.

I love your system. Very satisfying way to organize them.

You mean like this? It sounded like a rpg blowing up right beside you. The heck with color coordinated for employees. I need it for me…lol. Really good idea Heath.

Agreed, glad you’re ok brother.

Those Chapman 1 gallon bleach pump ups were my favorite. They have gone down hill this year. I’ve called their customer support several times this year to get free replacement spray handles. Now the tank just cracked. Unbelievable.

I haven’t had any issues yet. But I like them better than the HDX’s. Only had 2 of those go bad but the Chapins perform better.

Funny you should mention that. I was gonna ask you if you’ve had problems with them this season. Either the gun stops working, the pump, or liquid leaks through the middle of the pump because a seal went bad. I’ve had better luck with the cheap Walmart sprayers. Chapin had to have changed something in them. I should call and complain too. I’ve thrown probably 7 out this year. Some have failed a day or two after first use.

The Home Depot ones didn’t last 2 days. They are horrible.

I’ve been using them for about 3 years. This year I have noticed a significant decline in quality. You stated all the same problems I had. Seems like everything else now a days. If they don’t raise the price of something they reduce the quality and keep the same price. I am definitely letting them know about the decline in quality.

I didn’t have those issues but I prefer the Chapins. No issues in 3 months or use now. Using about 20 of them.

Had the same issues with the HDXs, but then I stocked the shelf with them in the spring when they ran them for $5 for the 1 gallon. We just ran out of new ones last week, so the search is on.
