Pull cord problems:

Couple of weeks?

Yeah, dont need it right now.
I am busy for the next 3 weeks.
Just bought it cause it looked nice.

Any update on the Cobra?

I’ve used this kind for a few years when working on equipment. Have replaced quite a few for commercial landscapers and have never had anyone complain or have one break. It’s strong stuff.

All I have is 3/16" (#6) right now but if you want a piece to try in any equipment let me know and I’ll mail you a piece.

Thanks for the offer! I’ve seen that on Amazon. I’ll probably just order a roll. What size is best for the GX 390?

I went thru 3 in a month, had one sitting on the table waiting for me to re-string, kids played with it bend the spring cant re-string that anymore. I started using 8mm prussiks cord, have not had a break since.

I believe #7 or 7/32" is what you want for a GX390.

There are saints among us…

For cold starts I always put the choke at half or full and the pull start is super easy. Even if the engine has been off for 15 minutes and has gone lukewarm I put choke at half for the easy pull. My worst nightmare is having the pull cord break in the middle of a job. Although after reading this thread I will purchase a spare pull start housing for the gx390 just in case.

This is really important, for a while I was having major issues with my pull cord. Turned out that the problem was I did not have my gun open, which was causing the water pump to make more resistance. Try starting with the water running.

So ball valve on or holding gun with trigger pulled?

I’m still on my original cord in my gx390 from 1.5 years ago. I learned from Under Pressure on YouTube to keep ball valve open and detach gun with water flowing when starting. So much easier to start that way. Also, as mentioned earlier, pull the cord slowly until it grabs then yank to,start. Same thing when shutting machine off…detach gun and open ball valve so pressure doesn’t remain in pump.

Every time I replace my pull cord the handle never sits flush with the machine. It hangs about 4 inches even though I cut it the same length as the original. It drives me nuts.

You need to pre-tension the spring some.

I’m jealous. The pull cord sitting tight to the engine. Mine looks like a limp… and I’ve replaced so many I’m ashamed to say.

Here’s a link to the problem you’re having as far as you’re pull cord hanging out some…it’s about 8 min into the video
