Plunger Pump

Question, If a belt drive pump has low psi from wear/years of work, but has no water leaks just low psi… No broken plunger ect…

Would it need the seals? Or Check valves? Or both?

Pop it open and have a look. Seals will be obvious if they’re bad. Check valves just do a simple compression test to make sure they actually function. If you have bad seals you probably also have cavitation. You can put new seals in a cavitated pump but they won’t last as long as they would otherwise. Once you pull the seals you’ll want to have a new set to install.

It does Cavitate sporadically, with a good supply of water going into it…

It does have the required 3500 while off the trigger but then drops to 1500 while on the trigger and won’t do anything else over 1500 psi

I’m not sure what you mean by this. Cavitation is inside the brass manifold in the bore where the seals seat into. The water and pressure literally cavitate the brass and chew it up. You probably won’t be able to see the cavitation until you pop out the seals and look down inside there.

It sounds like you may have a stuck check valve or a combination of that, bad seals and possibly a cracked plunger. It just takes a few minutes to open up the manifold and have a look.

Depends what pump you have, some aren’t worth the labour and fresh oil. If you must rebuild it would be a good idea to replace seals and check valves at the same time to not be chasing wear and tear around.

Its an AR pump…

Funds are limited just trying to help someone out… not my machine… Ill open her up and post pics

Found the problem, 1 check valve does not seat back properly. Looks rusty and doesn’t operate smoothly

Going to do seals and new check valves and that should do it!
