Personal or commercial auto for brand new business

Hey guys, so if you just started your business and it’s only part time (after work and on weekends). Can I keep my personal auto insurance or do I need commercial? I have an LLC and Business insurance but I’m confused on my auto. I have a small pick up truck no Trailer or fancy truck bed rig just a basic set up for now. Obviously if I grow and get bigger commercial makes since but I just started getting things ready my first season will be in the spring so I would hate to cancel my personal and get commercial if it’s not needed right now.

Let me know what you guys think/ would do

Thanks

Every insurer will have their own rules for when you need to have something more than personal insurance.

So call them and explain exactly what you’re planning on doing.

The last thing you want is to be in an accident you’re at fault for, and the opposing attorney finds out you were on your way to a job…And then you find out you don’t have the right insurance and your insurance company won’t cover you.

Some companies will let you use it in a business or classifying it as business use, but it gets sticky……if it were me I would as @qons said, check with your current company and go from there, but ultimately I would go with a commercial lines policy, you’re a lot safer that way.

Thank you for your info I’ll call my agent tomorrow. I know you guys aren’t lawyers but how about registration? Do you have your trucks registered to you or to your business? We have LLC to protect us if our trucks are registered to me personally and not the LLC am I setting myself up for potential issues?

Yes. Have your vehicle coverage under your LLC…

And remember, your agent is basically there to protect you from the adjuster in case of an event, but they don’t always do a good job of that. Do your research.

I would put under LLC. You need to have your LLC. (Business) totally separated from you or personal stuff. Otherwise a good lawyer will “pierce the veil” of your LLC. Happens more often than you think…

Here is something you can do is to lease the truck to the LLC to protect yourself with registration. But you do have to put an amount in the lease IE ( $ 1 ). I know this seems silly but it will protect you for that just in case.
