Painted concrete changed color?

He’s got some left over, he said this is it

It’s a common issue. It will have to be repainted. If you hit it with 12.5, you’ll just make it even worse. SW paint has organic pigments and will change colors on contact with SH even mild mixes. Check out the Facebook group called cleaning industry paint issues for more information.

I thought it was only a few Sherwin Williams paint types not all Sherwin Williams paints. If it’s only certain ones is there a way to identify them from the can?

Stop throwing out bad advice please.

Please explain how what I said was bad advice? Clearly on par with what others were saying?

I believe the paints pigments reacted with the SH, causing the color change. Some, not all, SW paints have the organic pigments that react this way. Oxidation is a good guess but the vinyl above doesn’t support that idea. Bleaching out paint isn’t a thing. If you want to further prove the claim, hit it with a hot mix in an small inconspicuous area and see how it reacts. If it gets worse, repaint with a non SW paint would be the best route.

I think he was referring to your comment about SH effect on paint. I have to agree with him, since I wash painted surfaces numerous times a week with no problems.

I gotcha, wasn’t clear on that but I was ONLY referring to paint that is damaged by bleach :joy:. I can see how that could easily confuse a new guy

Bleach doesn’t damage paint… doesn’t bleach out paint… the SH simply reacted with the pigments in this particular paint… no damage just a chemical reaction.

I went over and looked at it today, it definitely bleached the paint. There’s also spots the hit the back of the house where you can see where the over spray ran down. We tried a light mix in a pump sprayer on the back door to the basement and not even a minute later the paint was already spotting and streaking from the sh. I don’t want to risk making the side of the house any worse so I’m not going to re apply any more mix. I imagine so many home owners have painted foundations, painted wood siding houses, I was under the impression soft washing doesn’t damage that. Now I’m afraid if I see paint I won’t want to even touch it

I’m going to have to re paint it. Luckily he has left over paint from where they built his house.

You just always have to do a test spot on paint. It’s mainly only certain Sherwin Williams paint. Most paints are oblivious to SH unless it gets underneath it from cracks in the paint. That can cause it to lift and chip off. Most people don’t paint their foundation so you don’t have to worry about that too much. When you see a painted house find a spot like behind the gas meter, a/c unit, under the deck, etc to do a test spot. I have a spray bottle with some 4% mix to test. If 4% doesn’t hurt it you know you’re good to go. Always remember, whenever in doubt or, it’s something new to you, be sure to do a test spot. They’ll save your bacon almost every time.
