Hey guys, Sorry I didn’t take a picture I didn’t start questioning myself about this until after I left. Client has a her garage finished with epoxy. There is a small rust stain and I wanted to remove it for her as a little bonus. It will be safe to use Oxalic Acid on that finish right? I don’t want to make a costly mistake…anyone have experience using it? Does anyone suggest using something else? TIA.
How small? Did you know that most toilet bowl cleaners have hydrochloric acid in them and that would also take care of the rust? Why do I mention this…because toilet bowl cleaners are usually thick. Put a little on a Q-tip and it should take care of the problem. ALWAYS TEST FIRST!
If it a epoxy floor almost nothing will damage it except epoxy or paint stripper. Endless it’s a iron stain OX won’t do much. Most rust stain in garages are from a battery or coolant. You will probably need something stronger then OX for those .
Yep florida is spot on, most epoxy coatings have been developed to resist breakdown from acids, degreaser etc.
And cacogirl is also right in suggesting a test first.
Epoxies can resist coating coating breakdown however they can still discolour and have the surface sheen altered by a hot mix of chemicals.
You could just clean her sidewalk or something else. I’m big on extras but would never risk it if I didn’t know for sure what the outcome would be. Not the place to be testing.
its very small, its on the very outside of the garage where the garage floor meets the driveway. its on the outside of the garage door. its caused from something dripping from her trim
I like using toilet bowl cleaners because of the cling they stay in one place.
John,
I know this is a late answer but Oxalic did not harm my epoxy floor in my garage while removing a rust stain from a LP tank that left a rust ring. I had to hit it twice and let it dwell for 5 minutes each time.
