Hey…looking for advice/recommendations. I have been running a soft washing business on the side for a few months now. I would like to quit my job and do soft washing full time. Unfortunately I live in PA so cannot soft wash year round.
My biggest drawback of quitting my current job is potentially having no income during winter (almost half the year!)
Just wondering …what does everyone do during the winter months?
My climate let’s is work 11 months out of the year. Not every climate can support a washing business year round.
Keep your job. 6 out of 12 months would be a tough gig.
Easy…don’t spend it all immediately after you make it. Save up in anticipation of winter.
Exactly what Surface Therapy said. Don’t quit your job until you’re making at least twice as much as what you need to pay the bills and survive each month. If you’re only able to wash six months out of the year you’ll have to make twice as much during wash season. I wouldn’t even think about quitting my job until I was making at least the same yearly income in 6 months of washing. I also wouldn’t quit until I had a pretty good size savings account for emergency use. You also have to think about the additional cost of health insurance and retirement investments. I’m in IL so my season isn’t all year but I still washed up into November last year. Work had slowed down though. Look into gutter cleaning to extend the season. There’s always snow removal even if it’s just residential with a snow blower. Some guys even do Christmas light installs. I guess there’s really good money in that. It’s not long-term though. There are definitely other business you can look into but you really have to look at the numbers before quitting a full time job.
Yup, I don’t get any WC or PW calls between January and March, so I just atrophy.
You can do gutter debris removal during off months . But like some have said , save up and lower your monthly expenses
