Muffler Heat

Finally getting around to mounting up the GX630 on the skid. Quick question though… how close can I safely place something to the non-exhaust side of the muffler? That side sits roughly level with the skid shelf (maybe a bit higher) and is currently about 6 inches away from the aluminum. Just not sure how much heat that side really puts off or if I need to be cautious about having components in that zone. I’ll be relocating the hose reels, downstream bypass, and 3-way valve to leave a clear line of sight around that side of the muffler to deter melting any hoses/plastics/etc, but wasn’t sure how cautious I should be.

around the muffler you need about 3 to 5 inches clearance . Now on the exit you will want at least 24 inches for that area. Either a clear path or with a pipe or defection for the exhaust stream.

You’re good 6” will be fine.

I was a little worried at first since that’s usually where my gas tank sits, but I ran it for an hour or two to check for leaks and dial in the unloader. The shelf stayed cool to the touch, and even with my hand near the muffler, I could barely feel any heat on that side.

On another note—holy cow, these engines are awesome. Way quieter than the single-cylinder I was running before, and using the pump at it’s rated GPM/PSI is great.

You can pop rivet a tin metal heat shield on the side of the muffler you want to block the heat from.
