Motor shutting down only while soaping

Hey haven’t posted here in a bit. I was on a job today and while applying soap to the house my engine shut off abruptly. I have a gx390 with 5.5gpm gear drive pump. Had it 6 years with no issues. Started back up and can soap for 30 sec - 1 min and it would shut off again. It doesn’t shut off at all while I rinse with same m5 twist. I can rinse all day long. put on a new injector and same thing…shuts off only while soaping. It doesn’t shut off using pressure tips. I put on my pressure gauge and was fine…2500psi and 3000psi spike when using pressure tips. Do you think it’s the unloader? It’s not surging and seems to be working fine. It’s the same one I’ve had on there 6 years. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like an engine issue to me. Oil shut down sensor isn’t an unheard of culprit so make sure you are good there. If it randomly occurred on its own with no recent work done to the engine, I’d start with a spark plug. Engines have higher compression while running under a load which is beneficial to the destination of fuel. Soap nozzles will lessen the load. If you can’t remember the last time you adjusted the valves, knock that out while you’re at it. The Everest parts kit on the rig and a spare engine in the garage is the best way to make sure a gx390 keeps delivering the groceries. Just my 3 cents.

Yeah, that sounds like an unloader issue. It’s probably getting weak and the low back pressure is causing it to lug the engine. Swap the unloader and dial in the new one and report back.

As mentioned check the oil level too.

I have a 390 as well. How often do you need to adjust the valves. I definitely just realized I need to look into more threads about maintenance to be honest.

For routine maintenance check them every 1,000-3,000 hours

Every 50 hours I follow check or replace this list of maintenance items

Nice!! Thanks for that!

Update: Well I changed the oil and changed out the unloader and problem fixed. The oil was fairly low…so could’ve been shutting off for safety mechanism. The unloader was about 6 years old…so probably needed swapped out anyways.
