Masonite Cleaning?

Please hold your stones! Not the ones under your belt. I typed in masonite and nothing came up so I wanted to ask a couple questions. First the obvious has anyone ever dealt with it? If so anything special I need to be concerened with? Second the color see photos. I plan on a test spot on the garage to make sure nothing crazy happens. Vet’s should I wash this color? It looks kinda splotchy in the photos didnt’ notice in person. I think its just wet and dry spots from the rain today.

Hmm. Isn’t Masonite just the poor man’s version of Hardiboard? Hardiboard can have it’s own share of challenges so if it’s the superior product then I’d be pretty leery of washing the cheaper Masonite.

Hopefully some others with experience chime in.

She said her husband washed it with clorox back when it was painted white. They built the house like 30years ago. I’m more concerned with the color but I hate not washing something that needs it and she wants the porch done and restained but she is wanting it stripped to bare wood and go with a transparent I may pass on that part havent decided yet. I have some research to do on stripping MDA1775 has answered a couple ?'s so I won’t bug the good folks here unless someone just want’s to flex a knowledge muscle. Thanks for your response.

If it’s painted you have to worry about the paint not really the surface underneath. Do a small test spot to make sure it doesn’t stain the paint. I did a painted house yesterday and checked the paint with like 4% in an area that would never be seen. It didn’t do a thing so I knew my house wash would be just fine. If you’re ever concerned about paint and, there isn’t any organics, just use soap and no SH.

Cool thanks for tip. Down here though we get organic. I have yet to see a house without mildew or algae. I did mention to her about a test spot to make sure. I didn’t think of mixing it a little hot. At 4% would the reaction be pretty instant? I’d imagine yes.

You’re better off starting at like 1% and then maybe keep bumping it up until you get a little higher. That way if there is a reaction it won’t be very noticeable.

I have washed some painted masonite type siding with my hw mix and it never has been an issue. Test spots are your friend and I use stronger mix on the text spots…more bleach and soap than in the hw mix…if it is going to react, I want it to react. And, I have had one building that reacted slightly …I told the owner and just rinsed it as it had no organics on it and seemed to be reacting to the soap…go figure.

LOL, I just go for the 4% right off the bat. I want to be really sure quick.

Seriously @PWP5gpm, that color green is made from yellow. I’ve had that color turn yellow in places with just a HW mix but few days later was ok. But the quicker you rinse it the better.

This is what I do. Find the most inconspicuous area possible and wet 'er down. I had one here recently that looked fine for about 10 minutes and just as I was about to say let’s ride I looked back at it and it had faded at least three shades.

If you have it still I’m sure it was from an old post I found last year sometime.

I’m going to test a spot on the back of the garage. I’ll wait the ten minutes too. I’d hate to get started and find out halfway through I killed it not in a good way.

It’s funny. We’re on here talking to Rick right now and I’m also watching one of his trailer build videos on the TV lol every time I watch these videos I pick up on something I missed the first ten times.

I do the same thing. I just figured I better correct myself because with my luck he’d come back on here and say the homeowner is livid about the light stains the test spot left…lol

Lol. Thanks for thinking beyond the now.

You know, the other day I was educating a customer about organic-pigmented paint and what can go wrong with it and that it was essentially a 50/50 shot if it was or wasn’t and she said well go for it. So I did. It wasn’t and it turned out beautiful.

HOWEVER

The paint on the outdoor cabinet on her detached apartment WAS organic pigment and did what we all expect it to do. Thank God it was just a small cabinet and not the whole apartment lol
